The network has booked it for 26 weeks with option to extend it to 30 weeks which is almost certain to happen. Home-grown comedy has been scarce on Canadian radio and television and, especially, Montreal.

Now Montreal appears to be leading the way in comedy broadcasting across this Besides the weekly appearance of "Funny" on radio, CBMT here and maybe CBC-TV nationally later will present a spin-off from the radio program called Comedy Cafe. west. CTV will launch a Montreal comedy show of its own, a version of the successful stage become a Canadian classic. It features in feverish debate the les Anglais a couple of whom the husband is enthusiastically French-Canadian and the wife as fervently English-Canadian. Morgan writes most of the radio show and works jointly with Bronstein ojt the TV show. TV show's content, according to Producer Dale Barnes, is made up about 35 per-cent of material used on radio with the rest written specifically for TV.

Heron, who gets first call on comedy material from Morgan and free-lance contributors, uses this measuring guide: "First, the material must be funny, which is good. If it's funny and topical, so much the better. If it's funny and topical and Canadian, that's perfect." CTV's Squeeze will also put the accent on the topical. The show will feature Dave Broadfoot, Peggy Mahon and Ted Zeigle. Broadfoot writes most of the material.

Gerry de Villiers is the producer. Zeigler is also a regular on radio's Funny You Should Say That with Joan Stuart, Barrie Baldaro and Peter Cullen. The radio program will use revue Squeeze which will be shown once a month on CFCF-TV, starting Oct. 10. These three programs have in common a lot of young talent with a refreshing approach to topical humor.

When John Morgan and Martin Bronstein joined to write Funny You Should Say That under the guidance of veteran radio producer Frank Heron last year, they had some doubts about the amount of topical Canadian comedy material Canadian audiences might willingly absorb. They leaned, seemingly for security, on major pre-tested subjects for satire like De-Gaulle and President Johnson and other international figures and institutions, as if fearful of their program becoming typed too "Canadian," i.e., provincial. These fears appear to have been put to rest. 'Canadian' Targets a tirization of Canadian foibles, especially touching on English-French relations, provoked the most laughter from studio audiences at the tap-ings of both Funny You Should Say That and Comedy Cafe.
