HUGH HANSON Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in St. James the Apostle Church for C. Hugh Hanson, former Montreal executive committee vice-chairman, who died at his nome yesterday after a lengthy illness. He was 82.

Born in Montreal, and educated Mr. Hanson worked briefly' in the insurance business, before devoting his life to the brewing industry. He retired as executive vice-president of Canadian Breweries in 1952 and served as a part-time consultant until fully retiring in 1963. Mr. Hanson was active in charity work with the Red Feather and the Rotary Club of Montreal.

He commanded the Canadian Grenadier Guards (Militia) and held the rank of lieutenant-colonel. Shortly after the Second World War, Mr. Hanson fought for veterans' rights. He insisted that Canada should put a stop to immigration until Canadian veterans and their families had been housed and employed. In the early 50's, Mr.

Hanson, as executive committee vice-chairman for the city spoke out against the building of a subway here, feeling that a series of expressways would do a better job. He also wanted more tunnels and bridges for the city. He also backed a civil defence program for the Militia and warned Canada about its lack of preparedness in case of nuclear attack. Mr. Hanson was also active on the Montreal Board of Trade and represented their interests on many occasions.

He is survived by wife, the former Kathleen Cains; a daughter Adrienne (Mrs. S. A. Cobbett); a sister Dorothy; a brother Denny and two grandchildren. J.

H. MACFARLANE A private funeral service was held yesterday for J. Harrison (Harry) Macfarlane, well-known in the city's construction industry. He was 73. Mr.

Macfarlane was born here and received his education at Westmount Academy and McGill University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts and Science in 1916. He served overseas with the 9th Canadian Field Ambulance in the First World War and was awarded the rare Distinguished Conduct Medal and Bar. In the Second World War he was actively engaged with the Allied War Supply Board and later with Crown Assets Disposal Corporation. Mr. Macfarlane is survived by his wife, the former Doris Marguerite Topham; a son Ian a daughter Marguerite (Mrs.

McGill University and Bishop's University will offer the course qualifying graduates to enter three-year university courses in Arts and Sciences. McGill will conduct its program over the next four years.

Bishop's will continue its program until enough English-language CEGEPs are available in the province. Sir George has already announced a similar program. This year Grade XII graduates can enter the first year of the new three-year university program. Grade XI graduates must take the tv CEGEP course before entering the three-year program. Education officials in Quebec are contemplating eliminating Grade XII and following the five-year post-secondary formula.

The first English-language CEGEP will be opened in September at Dawson College with an expected enrollment of 1.800.
