THE GAZETTE, FRIDAY, JULY 14, 1967 39 OBITUARY OBITUARIES Security 'Dry Runs' Ciiy Police Rehearse For de Gaulle Visit BIRTHS DEATHS lllltMfaWeM i a ma. REOUIEM MASSES IN MEMOMAMS AND CARDS OF THANKS ENSAS-EMENT ANNOUNCEMENTS AND MARR1A6E NOTICES DEATHS KAUFMANN, Mary. On July Uth. For the first time since the opening of Expo 67, Montreal police have been holding "dry runs" for the upcoming visit of a head of state namely France's President Charles de Gaulle. Montreal is going ahead, as planned, with dress rehearsals complete with motorcycle escorts and cars filled with armed security nel, despite the insistence of the Provincial Government that the Quebec Provincial Police should have control over security while the general is in the province.

The Montreal force has been told that the QPP which up until now has not appeared in the security picture intends to take responsibility for de Gaulle's route in Montreal and will escort him into City Hall to be re- By EDDIE COLLISTER ceived by Mayor Jean Dra-peau. The local force, which has been working hand-in-hand with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police since the influx of state visits started in July has prepared a full turnout for its escort. On Tuesday, mechanics began to dismantle motorcycles with sidecars to convert them into the much more maneuv-erable "solos." Wednesday evening and again yesterday a practice motorcade began trying out different routes through the city. During yesterday's trial run from the Chalet atop Mount Royal reporters riding in limousines found themselves being cheered as the motor Youth Serum Probed In Women's Deaths Julien Giguere of the CIB, were charged with the investigation. Two persons had been detained by police in connection with the case but were released on the orders of Coroner Lapointe.

Some 12 witnesses, including the two material witnesses, are scheduled to appear before the coroner's inquest. Meanwhile police are checking all sudden deaths during the last couple of months for possible victims. Coroner Laurin Lapointe will open an inquest at 10 a.m. today into the death of two women believed to have died following the injection of a youth serum in a St. Denis St.

doctor's office. Inspt. Adrien Cardinal of Criminal Investigation Bureau said yesterday that the inquest will deal with the deaths of the two women, but added that there might have been more victims. The body of another person, a man, will be exhumed in connection with the case. The victims are said to have been given the injections of youth serum, prepared from the hormones of unborn lambs, in the early part of June.

The first victim died a week after the June 3 injection, the second about two weeks ago and the third last Saturday. An autopsy of the last victim showed death came as a result of generalized gangrene. Insp. Cardinal said the patient was "supposed to become young again," after the rejuvenation injections. N.Y. May Buy Subway Cars From Montreal NEW YORK rpi Mayor John Lindsay said Thursday New York is considering buying 48 cars now being used in Montreal's new subway system. The 48 cars now are being used to transport passengers to the Expo 67 site from downtown Montreal, Lindsay said. Lindsay said he discussed the purchase with Mayor Jean Drapeau of Montreal on a recent trip to Expo and the matter was being studied by New York's Transit Authority. The cars would replace those now used on the Staten Island rapid transit railway.

Lindsay said the cars would cost $80,000 each compared with the $115,000 now being paid by the Transit Authority. He said the rubber-wheeled cars "incorporate the most up-to-date standards of interior design and passenger comfort and are specifically designed for outdoor use." Cosa Nostra Figure Dies LIDO BEACH, N.Y. (AP) Thomas Luchese, 67. head of one of New York's five Cosa Nostra families, died quietly in bed Thursday at his spacious home. He was better known as Three Finger Brown.

Despite the official gangland status accorded him during a 1963 Senate investigation, Luchese once insisted: "I know nothing about any Cosa Nostra. Never heard of it. The only thing I belong to is the Knights of Columbus." Although he was questioned more than once in murder investigations, Luchese's only conviction for a crime came in 1921, when he served 25 months for auto theft. Luchese was considered one of the most powerful figures in the garment industry, with a hidden interest in dozens of firms. He maintained he was a legitimate businessman.

The RCMP, which has been charged with the onus of responsibility for the safety of visiting dignitaries, is going ahead with its preparations for the visit by President de Gaulle. The hassle between police forces comes on the heels of a political battle between the federal and provincial authorities over the visitor's itinerary. President de Gaulle is slated to arrive in the provincial capital on July 23 aboard the French Navy cruiser Colbert. His five-day visit includes a trip here to participate in France's national day at Expo 67, and a visit to Ottawa before returning home by air. Lauds Career LONDON (CP) The Times carries a long obituary on Guy Favreau, former Liberal justice minister who died Tuesday in Montreal.

The newspaper says Fa-vreau's career included "his unswerving faith in co-operative federalism and his absolute loyalty to the prime minister." "Seldom has there been a political figure in Canada whose future looked so promising and yet in the space of a couple of years, because of a mixture of parliamentary inexperience, bad luck, and bad health, found himself in the end on the lower rungs of the ladder after almost I having reached the top." E. T. Asselin, legal counsel for the association, said yesterday that the brief of May. 1967, led to one negligible change in road signs leading to Montreal. "We asked that it be indicated on Route 20 eastbound that the centre of the city can be reached via Route 2 (Sherbrooke All that was done following our request was the addition of Montreal West to a sign on Route 20 that reads: "Rue St.

Jacques." Motels on Upper Lachine Rd. and in N.D.G. he said, are deprived of a considerable volume of trade since Route 20 was opened in May. Another request made to the roads department was an indication at the junction of Routes 9 from Plattsburgh, and Route 9c that Montreal is accessible via Route 9c and over Mercier Bridge. "As things now stand," Mr.

Asselin said, "the only indication given at that junction is that Valleyfield lies at the end of 9c."
