Our Torborton couldn't quite hang on in the featured ninth. We got back the winning track in the 10th when Brock-le's Colt took the lead coming past the stands and stayed there all the way to win and pay $3.70. For the night five winners in nine races. By DOUG GILBERT bf The- Gazette Most harness trainers become extremely guarded around this time of year when the subject turns to their untested two-year-old colts.

And Jim MacGregor, Prince Edward Island's gift to Montreal racing, can be pretty guarded when talking about any of his horses at any time. So, when James invited you over to the barn to look at one in February you have to see. what all the excitement's about. "Collins Game," said MacGregor pointing to a shaggy appearing youngster wlx was wrestling with lunch in the farthest corner of his stall. bargain since Jim picked him up at Harrisburg for $5,500 on behalf of owner Myron Bell (Torrid Encounter and Grant Minbar) of Charlottetown.

"Myron's from one of the oldest racln families in the Island," 8 ay a Jim. "His father used to have some good ones. Now he owns the Old Spain restaurant and the Grenada lounge down there. "Curls a lot too. Couldn't even reach him Saturday to tell him about Grant Minbar's win 'cause he was out winning the Legion bonspiel." Curling, it seems, is the winter avocation of most of the Island's extensive racing fraternity.

BRIER BOUND MacGregor's brother Bill will be throwing the third rocks for Kip Ready's rink when the Brier opens in St. Johns, next Monday. "Cripes," says James, "everybody's in it. BIG EARNER "The best colt I ever had," says MacGregor, "was Ideal Donut back to 1969, and he didn't show it this soon. "I always had faith in him, but he was just another horse in the winter. By summer he was beating Columbia George, Most Happy Fella, and the best around. He had earned $40,000 before the year was half over.

"And then he just up and died on us. Five vets went over him after it was over and they couldn't figure out what happened. They thought it was blood poisoning. You never know with the colts." ronto to wrestle, are the key names with Eastern Sports. Grand Prix has Edouard Carpentier, Don Leo Jonathan, Ivan Koloff and their newest hot property, seven-foot-four, 400-pound Jean Fer-re from France.

In 15 Forum dates Rougeau and Langevin have averaged 14,000 fans. Their next card there is March 20. At Sauve, they run between 2,500 and 3,000 a week. Paul Vachon says the Verdun nights have drawn between 3,000 and 4,000. They've gone into the Forum twice so far.

One date was a flop, aborted by an ice storm. The count was 5,000. The other was an attraction Jan. 12. They go back tonight with Jonathan and Carpentier, Koloff and Joe Leduc.

Both run a provincial circuit and get widespread exposure on TV. And both see wide vistas for expansion. Grand Prix is moving into the Rouyn-Noranda area- and Eastern Sports has exclusive rights on Jarry Park for-outdoor shows next summer. DODGEl Till 31st MARCH 3-OW Master J.4 2.49 Muney Again 'Confused morality Dr. Lionel Tiger, internationally-acclaimed an thropologist from Montreal, writes in his book, 'Men in groups': "Commercial wrestling is almost entirely scripted.

But it is necessary for all per formers to maintain very excellent physical con dition because the work is dangerous otherwise. Continual practice is necessary to ensure timing and skill in the various falls, jumps, holds and twists, which constitute the classical repertoire of the wrestler's ritual enactment of a confused morality play scene." 3-Gretn River Ruthie Rwal Cook, Lefrtwe 8 2 3 3 3-Vi 14.90 Jff" At i 5 sJS Lao 7 U2' on uw 5 I i tiv, sis SfiETjVmS it 11 J'U 3.40? Says Rougeau, aceusing-Grand Prix of an old wrestling gimmick: "They're trying to play the nice guys. We're supposed to be the heavy. But sooner or later these things are going to bounce back in their face." BOTH WAYS A number of wrestlers have performed for both outfits.

Rougeau and Langevin claim they were raided. Paul Vachon says on that subject: "We tell our wrestlers we dont care who they wrestle for. All I have to do is pick up the phone. I can call wrestlers anywhere. They trust me." In any event, the way it works out, performers booked by one group normally maintain an allegiance.

They've made offers to people in my office. And there's even documents missing from our files. We reported the theft to the police. But what good is that? It just seems like sour grapes.

"We're supposed to be running wrestling down. Well, we're the ones that set the records for attendance all over the province. In the old Forum, nobody has topped out 17,998 Of April, 1968. And we drew 20,000 since the renovation and installation of the extra seats. That's running it down?" Langevin, contends meanwhile that the opposition has violated a gentlemen's agreement, providing for a moratorium on promotion before the other guy's show at the Forum is over.

"So far this one's been perfect." 1 If Collins Game turns out to be something in this summer's Canadian Juvenile Circuit he'll be some kind of a with cattle prods and we want the officials to be respected." Rougeau and Langevin say they arrhot averse to healthy competition.

But they view the Vachons and Gregoire as interlopers and contend the newcomers have behaved unethically. "Where were they when Bob and I were building this business back in 1965, 1966 and 1967?" says Rougeau, who hasn't applied a reverse step-m toenora on anyway since last August when he to'd himself that a heart attack becomes a real danger in your 40s. By MARV MOSS of The Gsiettt A tiff for the lucrative wrestling territory' here has developed and nothing about this confrontation is a sham. One faction is based at the Paul Sauve Sports Centre. The other group operates out of Verdun Auditorium. Both run shows internally' once a week. But the big dough is at the Forum.

And the rivalry is carried on there with one monthly mat extravaganza each, cramming up to 30 wrestlers on a single card, men who make up to $30,000 a year and more, working two or three nights weekly. In one sense or another, all of the protagonists are part of the legacy of the late ebullient Eddie Quinn, a onetime cabbie who controlled the ring incontestably here for years before he died with image in eclipse after a couple of sour promotions. ROUGEAU'S TEAM Today, on the one side are Johnny Rouge a 42, and matchmaker Bob (Legs) Lan-gevin, 58, a man who beat cancer, with a colostomy, a surgical procedure to remove part of the intestine. With them is aide Joe Belanger, also 58, the bookkeeper. They call themselves Eastern Sports Enterprises and have been working out of the Sauve Arena since 1965 when Rougeau divested himself of the Mocambo, an east-end nitery.

"Boxing was part of the deal at first," Rougeau says. "But it's a big headache. Boxing people are too shrewd. They take everything and leave nothing for the promoter. That recent fight between Donato Paduano and Fern Marcotte is an example.

Regis Levesque had to risk $75,000 and he made $10,000 for his trouble. That's not sound business." In the other corner are Paul Vachon, 34, his brother Maurice, 42, who launched Grand Prix Wrestling at Verdun last May with matchmaker Lucien Gregoire, 60, left disabled by the same auto smash that almost killed Edouard Carpentier in 1964. Maurice bills himself as "Mad Dog." The Vacbons are part of a family of 13 offspring of a retired Montreal police sergeant who once worked In coal storage at the harbor and used to amuse his fellow-dockers by lifting eight of them with his back on a table in the lunchroom. GIRL WRESTLER Their kid sister Vivianne, 21, has followed them into the ring where she plays a kind of feminine rogue. But her appearances have been confined to Verdun and outside points.

They can't put hsr on their Forum cards. The Montreal Athletic Commission has banned women's wrestling. In Quinn's lavish heydey of tte 1950s, Belanger, as bis No. 1 inside man and confidant, used to book Rougeau, Langevin -and ies Freres Vacbons on Eddie's rambling circuit And Gregoire ran a satellite operation for Quinn at the old Stade Exchange at Mount Royal and d'Ibervilie Sis. before burned down in 1357.
