According to the basic primer, American plan means the price includes all meals, a custom started by the early American innkeepers when the country was first settled. FOOD IMPORTANT The earliest early American inns and taverns were really private homes which took in wayfaring journeyers, letting them share the meals with the proprietor and his family. Food was set out on big tables, smorgasbord style, and the cuisine not the acconj-. modations where one slept a considered important.

Wild turkeys and wild pigeons, oysters in almost any season, beef and venison and home-baked breads and cakes were part of the spread. There was no refrigeration and what was slaughtered or harvested had to be eaten. Food was so cheap that a night at an inn might cost one dollar and rarely more than $2.50. But when the traveler retired, it was to a dormitory and sometimes he was expected to share a bed with strangers. When the first American hotels appeared they followed the traditional American plan one price for meals and sleeping quarters.

But the hotels and the new inns had private rooms, even doors with private keys. Guests were still served meals at large tables. Some fancy hotels began to offer meals at any hour and even serve food in the guesfs own room. That practice came in for criticism for in revolutionary America it seemed undemocratic. EUROPEAN PLAN In Europe one dined as one wished and was charged accordingly.

This was the European plan as it is called to this day. It had begun in France, and after the French Revolution many chefs and waiters came to America bringing with them the European plan. Guests in American hotels were soon given a choice of American or European plans. But not until the railroads spread across the nation and the inflation that followed the Civil War boosted the prices did the European plan become a popular fixture in American hotels. first Jn-.

The remainder of the fee he has paid may be applied to whatever meals he chooses to take in the hotel, or to his bar bill, laundry bill, hairdresser, water sports, room service or the valet. The GO. plan is good insurance for anybody liable to blow his green bills in the casino.

He's still got money for meals stashed in his GO fund. And it is ideal for weight watchers who don't eat, and femmes fatales are taken out to dinner every night anyway. They can spend the money left in their GO fund on scuba diving lessons and having their clothes cleaned over and over. And guests at Las Brisas in Acapulco find a pot of coffee and a basket of rolls at the door each, morning. Fresh fruit is in the ice box that is in every room.

So is liquor and soft drinks. Breakfast is included in the price of the room, and you pay for drinks as. consumed, giving rise to a. new idea called the Las Brisas Plan. HOW M.A.P.
