Did you ever see a lady with a green face? You can, if you take a color picture of one sitting on a lush green lawn, surrounded by green shrubs. When you project this picture late on the screen, the lady won't like you, because she will look quite greenish, enough to make her squeamish. Actually the film doesn lie. She was greenish when you took that picture. All that luxuriant green around her reflected its light upon her, hence the verdant sheen.

Only we don't see it that way. We know a lady has a nice rosy teint, and our mind just refuses to accept it any other way. The impressionist painters had better color vision. Look at some pictures of people surrounded by foliage painted by Renoir or Monet. Invariably they saw the green glow and painted it, which probably didn't endear them to their models.

While we are now quite willing to accept Renoir's vision of a green-faced lady, a color slide showing a face in green or blue is strickly taboo. So keep in mind when taking color pictures that subject tones are influenced by the color of light reflected from the surroundings. If you don't believe it, you can prove it to yourself with a simple little experiment. Put a little white ball, a pingpong ball for example, on a large piece of scarlet cloth and take a color picture of it. The ball will be quite rosy, because red light from the cloth reflected upon it.

This rturbing phenomenon, usually called color cast, can easily ruin some of your favorite pictures if you are not careful. Green is the most common enemy because in summer people do lie on lawns or sit under trees and consequently there's a green tinge to the'r tan. At the sea, blue can be a isturbing factor, reflected from a vast expanse of blue water and heaven. It's the predominant color and tends to tinge everything around with itself. When you take pictures of near a bright brick wall, you can expect a reddish color cast, a reflection from the house wall.

Any large area of predominant color will influence, to some extent, surrounding colors. Now with red you don't have to worry too much. Somehow we are quite prepared to condone pictures with a reddish or pinkish hue. But green, blue and yellow are much less acceptable. If you take a picture of your wife in her favorite chair near the window with light streaming in softly through yellow lace or chiffon curtains, prepare yourself for a shock.

There's a good chance your wife will look sort of yellowish and it's probable she won't appreciate it. Color casts are particularly objectionable and disturbing when their origin is not included in the picture. If in that yellow picture you include the yellow curtains one can at least see at a glance why your wife looks yellow. If the curtains are not included, better prepare a detailed explanation before you flash that picture on the screen. On the whole, unless you are quite consciously seeking an unusual color effect, a sort of impressionistic photograph, you would be well advised to see before you click the shutter if color cast is likely tj occur and if yes, move to some other location.
