On May 26, 1970, three armed men broke into the home of Mr. Hawryluk's predecessor, tied up his family and took him to the office. The thieves forced him to open the safe and escaped with what police said was "a substantial amount of money." They were never caught. The urn was uncovered during excavation work at the village of Devniniori.

It was in a corroded copper box contained in a cyclindrical stone casket. The Sanskrit language inscription on the casket indicated that the urn contained relics of "Dasa-bala," one of the names of Buddha.
