THE BLUFFER'S GUIDE EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW FOR A DINNER CONVERSATION ABOUT Changes in local television The Gazette). It's on Channel 62, is part of the network, formerly CH, And what happened to it? On Fridays the CRTC approved an application 'Yj from Channel Zero to buy CJNT (along with CHCH in Hamilton, Ont.) from Canwest.

For how much? $12 for both. Isn't that cheap for a TV station? The price is nominal. CJNT and CHCH have never made money, and the alternative would have been to shut them down, as Canwest is doing to El stations in Victoria and Red Deer tonight. The sale removes red ink from Canwest's balance sheet. What's going to happen to Channel Zero is keeping all CJNT's local ethnic programming, and is plan ning to air ethnic music videos and movies to fill its schedule.

i. Open-ended discussion question: 't What kind of future does local TV have in an on-demand online world Jj" So, what's going on? The local TV universe is changing. TQS and Global Quebec are rebranding, CBC is expanding its local newscasts, and CJNT is getting a new owner. What's happening to TQS? It changes its name, effective today, to V. As in that obscure '80s sci-fi TV series? Not quite.

It's as in vedettes, vitesse, voyages, vices, ve'rite', violence and any other description of programming they can think of that starts with that letter. Why change the name from TQS? Because TQS has a really bad brand, known for airing cheap programming that titillated instead of educated. In March 2008, when Remstar bought TQS and brought it out of creditor protection with massive cuts (including its entire news division), that reputation only got worse. What else is TQS doing? The biggest new show this fall is Dumont 360, a daytime talk show hosted by former Action democra-tique du Quebec leader Mario Dumont. It begins next Monday at 5 p.m.

Other shows it will debut are Quebec versions on reality formats popular elsewhere, including Wipeout, Le Mur (based on a Japanese game show), Taxi payant (Cash Cab) and La guerre des clans (Family Feud). French-language versions of South Park, Entourage, The Mentalist, Lie to Me, Fringe and Private Practice are also on the menu for prime time. And news? Don't be silly. News is expensive. The closest you'll get, besides Dumont's show, is a new morning talk show and a sports roundtable show to replace 110.

How about Global? Tomorrow is the big day for CKMI, better known as Global Quebec. The station, which debuted in 1997 as a regional station technically based out of Quebec City, got approval from the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission this summer to change its licence to a local station based out of Montreal. The biggest benefit to this change is that the station will finally get access to local Montreal advertising, which it had been prohibited from accessing newscasts to 90 minutes from an hour. They'll also start earlier, at 5 p.m. instead of 6, and, starting next week, Montreal's newscast is getting new anchors.

Who? Andrew Chang, who is a regular reporter on the newscast, and Jennifer Hall, who comes from CTV's A network, where she was the national correspondent from Ottawa. What happened to Michel Godbout? The outgoing anchor is going back to reporting (and says he's looking forward to it). He'll play a "very prominent role in the newscast." How many journalists are they hiring to fill this extra air time? Other than Hall, none. The CBC is expecting to use its existing staff to fill the 90 minutes a day of news, which is structured as three consecutive 30-minute newscasts. And CJNT? What is that? That's the local ethnic station owned by Canwest (Canwest also owns Global TV and Why was it prevented from getting local ads? Competition.

The CBC and Montreal's CTV affiliate CFCF objected to Global's application to buy CKMI in 1997, arguing to the CRTC that the increased competition would hurt their ad sales in the tiny anglophone Montreal market. As part of the deal, the CRTC barred the station from broadcasting any local advertising. The station tried in 2001 to get local advertising in Quebec City, but again CFCF balked and the CRTC said no. So what changes will we see on air, aside from the ads? Not much. The logo is changing (replacing "Global Quebec" with "Global and it has a campaign going on asking its viewers what they like about the city, but the station has been a de facto Montreal station for quite some time.

How about CBC? That change will be much more noticeable on air. Starting tonight, CBC Montreal (callsign CBMT) joins local stations across the country in increasing local evening COMPILED BY STEVE FACUY Sources: Canwest News Service, TOST" La Presse, Rue Frontenac, Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunica-, tions Commission, Global Quebec, CBC tie at tilt Hidden treasures in your safe-deposit box?
