Ben Chazonoff was bom on September 28, 1 91 2 in Montreal, the son of Russian immigrants. He was a very successful and well-respected businessman in the construction industry. In 1 930 he started a plumbing and heating company "Winer and Chazonoff Inc." which was considered one of the largest Contracting firms in Canada.

He retired at an early age allowing him to devote all his time and energy to the Montreal Jewish community. His selfless efforts so successfully aided and abetted so many people. In 1975 he was awarded the Samuel Bronfman medal, Canadian Jewry's highest honour. His many accomplishments included: honorary Vice President of the Adath Israel Synagogue, Chairman of the building committee of the Adath Israel Academy, President and building Chairman of the Jewish Rehabilitation Center, founding President and Chairman of the building committee of the Jewish Nursing Home, President of the Mount Sinai Sanitarium, Vice President of the Jewish Hospital of Hope, active board member of the Jewish Federation, Chairman of the building committee of the Jewish Federation Cummings House and of Jewish Federation Caldwell Center, member of the board of directors and Chairman of the scholarship committee of the Canadian Friends of the Alliance Israelite Universale, Chairman of the trade division of CJA, and President of B'nai Brith Fellowship lodge.
