OKLAHOMA. The Promised Land. "On to Oklahoma!" is now the watehr word of (he thousands of homcseekers who have anxiously awaited the Persi-dent's proclamation opening this vast and rich country to public settlement. Colonies are being formed in every State and Territory in the Union. The million of acres may not furnish a homestead for all who come, but there will be thousands ready to relinquish their claims at a nominal figure.

The intending settlers should look the country over. via. great Rocklsland lioute popularly known as the "People's Fa vorite" wherever it runs. Kingfisher, the United States Land Office for Oklahoma, is the coming metropolis of the Indian Territory, and is located on the Rock Island Route. A fast line of stages has been put on to Fort Reno, to connect with the trains of the Rock Island Territorial extention.

This is the cheapest and best route and direct to the place you want to go. Through solid yestibule trains from Chicago via. Kansas City and St. Joseph, also from Denver, Colorado Springs and Pueblo to the Territory, through the cities of Topeka, Hutchinson, Wichiia, Wellington and Caldwell. It will be to your advantage to locate on the People's Favorite railway.

He should have courage; he should in some sense be a leader in the community; he should not be a mere negative character, with no opinions of his own that he dare express. If he is a teaoher of any worth he will have influence.

Acting with judgment and discretion he should make that influence felt in behalf of that which la noble and elevating. He Is inexcusable if he does not. He needs the courage to do right, and being a citizen as well as a teacher he iras rights which the community is bound to respect. JL teaoher should have convictions opinions not only on topics relating to school matters but on those of publio concern. Ha should be a man in the community, not a cypher; In word, he should be a man of affairs.

Neither should he be afraid to express his views ia a becoming manner on topics of general interest, and let his influence bo felt on the right side. I have only contempt for that teacher, man or woman, who knows nothing but echooL can talk nothing but school, and dare not even talk on school matters if there is a difference of opinion in the community. If av teacher is firm, courteous, discreet, and. true to his convictions, he will command the respect of his patrons althongh they may not agree with his views in all respects. They may even disagree with him radically, but they feel that he is honest, and they would rather have their children under the Influence and instruction of such a teacher than under one who is always feeling around to find out if it is eafa to say or do this, that, or the other thing.

After the little pupils become quite familiar with the letters of the alphabet as they do by the use of the word method, I give each a box of letters, call their fingers guns, and give each letter tho name of some animal far as possible, and have them hunt a certain Mnd of game that I buy of thera or take from them. For example, cell the C's chickens, and have the pupils find a3 many as they can for me by the time I come around to see the hunters. Take the letters and that bother most children, call the b's bears, the d's ducks, p's pigeons, q's quails, and alter a few hunting expeditions they distinguish them more readily. Philadelphia, March 10, The refusal Of the city national bank of Salem, N. J. to accept cer tain terms of exchange offered by Woodstown, N. national bank has involved those institutions in a lively war. As the Salem bank receives on deposit daily a large number of the Woodstown banks checks, a messenger is dispatched to the latter place -eight miles distant twice a week to receive the money.

In order to punish the Salem people Cashier Fiitccaft imported from Philadelphia thousands of dollars in silver coin, counted out in bags, to meet these checks semi-weekly. Messenger Powell, whom the Salem bank sent down last week, protested. Cashier Flitcraft, when Powell appeared with $4,800 in checks to day, wheeled out the money in a wheelbarrow to the middle of the bank and dumped the amount loose on the floor, compelling Powell to count out the entire amount. When bags were asked for in which to carry the money to Salem, Flit- craft politely responded that banks weie not in the habit of furnishing their patrons with purses. Powell sent back for a team and an armed guard to assist him in the transpor tation of his burden.
