From the Ontario Kibitzer (June 1962) Trials for the 1964 Team Olympiad. At a recent meeting of the Eastern Canadian Bridge Conference it was decided that the Canadian Teams for the World Bridge Olympiad, to be held in New York early in 1964, would be selected on the basis of trials. A total of 16 pairs will participate in a round-robin contest similar to the U.S. trials in Houston, some time in 1963. The 16 pairs will be selected on a regional basis as follows: Ontario 7 pairs-Eastern Canada 5 pairs-Western Canada 4 pairs.

The three pairs that emerge at the top at the conclusion of the trials will represent the Canadian Open Team. In a later issue of the Kibitzer (October) a list of sixteen teams that entered the trials is published and although the date and venue has not been decided the trials are expected to take place early next year. I am told that a committee has been formed in Montreal for the organization of the trials to choose the 5 Eastern Canada teams and that precise information about participation in the trials is forthcoming in the very near future. He tells of a Drooosed drive for new members in 1963 and says "one of the easiest ways far us to grow is to discontinue the unfriendly treatment that loses so many of the new members we have already He mentions: "We like to think that recent reforms have helped to raise the standards of social conducts. Directors have broader powers to penalize breaches of etiquette etc etc. Nevertheless we still have too many individuals who seem to have organized a membership drive in reverse: uicu uujcib accma uc drive out members.

The tournaments, while far from pure, are now being purged but the evil still flourishes in the croundroots where it can do uic nilat nana; ill lilv UUU games. Long standing members are entitled to consideration, but they must also be considerate of others. "It is therefore the duty of every member to conduct him self in a way that will encourage new members to feel wel come and to take an active role against those offenders whose behavior at the table does not eiu tne dignity and the sport-nanship inherent in the game." The brash young Brooklynite in a magazine interview a few months ago was quoted as saying, "They're all weak, all women.

They're stupid compared to men. They shouldn't play chess, you know. They're like beginners. They lose every single game against a man. There isn't a woman player in the world I can't give knight odds to and still beat." Soviet officials on her behalf have challenged Bobby to play a match at knight odds with her.

Bobby is not backing down and only insists that stakes of a side be set. The Russians are considering the matter. None of the Soviet experts think Bobby has a ghost of a chance at those odds. Besides winning three women's events during the past year, including the Challenger's tourney, Nona won the world title from Elizaveta Bykova by 9 pts. to 2 (7 wins, no losses, 4 draws) in the match at Moscow.

She also placed third in the men's championship of Georgia! Here is a game from the championship match.
