DOVER ILVYN DOUGLAS-PATRICIA NEAL-BRANDON deWlDE Woodward Is Signed For Film 2nd WEEK THE MOST WONDERFUL ENTERTAINMENT EVER (MAMS COUNTERFEITERS OF PARIS SNOWDON A brilliantly told little story from France about crime that does pay, heads the list this week in no uncertain terms. The story starts out with a trio of greedy crooks who are on the look-out for some easy money.

One has the bankroll, another is the negotiator, and the third, and most feckless of the team, has a mistress whose hushed is a master engraver of the genius class. Whet to do? Phoney money is the answer, but they need an expert to handle the scheme and look after the distribution. Who to get? There is only one the "old Once the schemers have reached this point the audience is in for a treat. The "old man" turns out to be Jean Gabin. He moves on the screen, creaking a little with age, but there is no doubt that the star has arrived.

He growls, he snarls, he passes insults, he flatters, he persuades, and, in short, takes over the whole picture and relegates everyone also to second place at best. It is a performance that will do your heart good. Mr. Gabtn, over the years, has piled up a fine reputation for himself as an actor, and now he has reached the time in his career when he can pick and choose the roles he wants to play. He obviously wanted to play this one.

He takes so much enjoyment in it, you can't help having as much fun as he does. The story is a well-written affair and if your French is shaky, for once the sub-titles convey the richness of the original. The dry wit, for instance, comes through admirably. Aside from Gabin, the cast contains Martine Carol, as the mistress; Bernard Blicr, Dalpetre and Frank Villard, as the originators of the counterfeit scheme, and Maurice Biraud, as the engraver who is brighter than everyone takes him for. Francoise Rosay appears in a brief but telling scene.

This is not a great or important film but it sure is an enjoyable one. BYE BYE BIRDIE PALACE A movie version of the stage musical about a teen-age idol who is drafted into the Army, turns out to be a quite handsome film with not too many drawbacks. For one thing, the movies have left the play almost as unpretentious as it was on stage. The screen has a tendency to gild the lily when dealing with stage shows but the temptation has been resisted here. The story involves a songwriter (about to go broke) who has finally persuaded the big rock 'n' roll star of his day to sing one oi his numbers.

Before he can do so, however, Uncle Sam puts the arm on the singer and disaster seems about to hit the writer. We reckon without his secretary. She arranges with Ed Sullivan to have Conrad Birdie (the singer) plant his ultimate pre-induction kiss on the rosy lips of a small-town teenager right there on the tube for all the U.S. and Canada to see. The scheme is fine except that the young girl's adolescent boy-friend objects.

The plot, as you can see, couldn't be simpler but the script for all its egg-on-the-face theme, has some very funny lines in it. These are mostly, praises be, put in the mouths of competent performers like Dick Van Dyke, Janet Leigh and Maureen Stapleton. We have never seen the last-mentioned actress handle a comedy part before but we hope she doesn't stop here she is marvelous. Mr. Van Dyke and Miss Leigh are able comedy artists as is Paul Lynde who plays the lucky teen-ager's har-rassed dad.

As far as the youngsters in the film are concerned, they are not called upon for much else but to swoon, and look handsome and healthy all of which they do with great ease. Ann-Margret, the up and coming young star, plays Kim McAfee, the chosen fan for the Birdie kiss. She is much to frenetic for our taste. When she calms down a little she will probably be really something for the musical screen. HOLD-OVERS AND OTHERS At the Capitol Today is a real red-letter day for Jerry Lewis fans.

Not only does the master's latest film, The Nutty Professor, open here but Mr. Lewis, himself will make four appearances on the stage. He will do shows at 2.00, 4,20, 6.55 and 9.15. At Loew's, Hod, a fine, well-written western with Paul Newman as the star. At the Kent, Wrong Arm Of The Law, a vintage Peter Sellers comedy.

At the Avenue, The Girls Take Over, a comedy from Britain. At the Westmount, Miracle' Of The White Stallions, a story about the Second World War and the Spanish Riding Academy in Vienna. At the Seville, Lawrence Of Arabia, a spectacular filming of the First World War desert campaign. At the Imperial, How The West Wa Won, a Cinerama film with a story. At the Alouecte, Cleopatra, The much awaited film turns out to be belong to Caesar after all.

Former Academy Award-winner Joanne Woodward has been signed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer to star with Stuart Whitman in Lawrence Weingarten's production of the mystery thriller, Signpost To Murder. Simultaneously studio announced that David Miller has been signed to direct. Miss Woodward, who won her Oscar for Three Faces Of Eve, will be working at MGM for the first time in her. career. Her husband, Paul Newman, currently is at the studio starring in The Prize.

Miller reports to MGM to start preparatory work as soon as he completes his current assignment, Captain Newman, M.D. Scheduled for a summer start, Signpost To Murder was adapted for the screen by Robin Estridge from the hit London stage play.
