Last week Frederick Law Olmstetul, the landscape engineer, who was detailed to select a site for Gen. Grant's monument, wrote a letter to Park President Crimrains, in which ho expressed the opinion that the site choson for the Grant tomb and proposed monument in Riertlde park was not a suitable one. It would be extremely unfortunate, he thought, if the remains of the dead hero were brought into close association with the gayoty of tho promenade, or if the city adopts plans for the terminal arrangements of the promenade, which, wouid destroy its main churacter. or which will prevent the promenade from having the great northern viow as its terminus. The letter has caused a greflt deal of discussion, and Mr.

Calvert Vaux. the landscape gardener of Central park, has replied to it at length, lie says that there is nothing in the most of Mr. Olmstead's objections, lie favors erecting the monument and llnal tomb on the southern portion of what is called "the loop," and then it wouid be prae-ticully out of the park, with a public roaS all around it. Small pathways loading to it for foot passengers could also be mado, and tho view from tho drfc'e and the park would be in no way impaired. Mayor Grace said: "Tho actual state of the monument, or what sort of a monument it wll be, has not yet boon docided upon.
