"When Shannon got pregnant, I wish I could have said that Glenn and I had used birth control, but it was the one time when it didn't work. After all, birth control is not fail-safe, and I thought that was an important point to get across.

Again, I think it sends a negative message to the audience to say that it's OK to risk death (by not using a condom) if there's a lot of passion between you and your partner." Involved for 10 years in supporting a woman's right to choose, Reed says her decision to found Daytime for Choice in New York City is a result of becoming more politically aware. She also wants to take charge of her own life. "My goal with Daytime for Choice is to educate people," notes Reed. "Abortion is not just a woman's issue, it's about liberty and the right to privacy. If women can't control their reproductive systems, then we can't control our destiny and we won't ever be truly free.

Women have come too far to be suppressed again." Does Reed ever worry that her outspoken views on abortion might hinder her acting career? "I have no fears that going public with my beliefs could negatively affect my career," she insists. "I think my views will help my career because people will see that I'm an intelligent and caring person who has her own opinions and isn't afraid to speak out. Being pro-choice doesn't mean I'm anti-childbirth or pro-abortion. I'm for a woman's right to choose. When did choice become a dirty word? Personal freedom is the principle on which (the United States) is founded." NANCY M.

REICHARDT UNITED FEATURE SYNDICATE NEW YORK Last spring, a single Shannon O'Hara, the character played by Margaret Reed on As the World turns became pregnant by resident bad seed Glenn Harrington, formerly played by Richard Burgi. But because "good girls" on soaps never have abortions, Shannon conveniently miscarried. Many soap critics panned the story Reed is the first to admit that she was upset by the plot twist. "I think what happened on the show sends a negative message to the audience," says Reed, who is an outspoken pro-choice advocate and founder of the U.S. East Coast division of Daytime for Choice.

"I was disturbed by the way the whole thing was handled. I dicussed it with my producer and we made the dialogue a little less strident. "When people were advising Shannon to have an abortion, she was supposed to say that the baby shouldn't have to suffer because Glenn was such a bad guy," she continues. "What we did was change the emphasis to Shannon being a very maternal person who has always wanted to have a child and that she didn't care who the father was. What I really wanted to say as Shannon was that I believe everyone has the right to choose what to do with her body.

But they wouldn't let me go that far, so we compromised." Reed is hopeful that soap operas will eventually tackle the controversial issue of abortion in depth. "I think in years to come, the soaps will deal with the subject of abortion because the tide is turning," Reed says. and we have a wonderful opportunity to educate people while entertaining them at the same time." The actress also believes it is important that contraception be discussed more often on daytime so that viewers will become more enlightened about preventing unwanted pregnancies. "The majority of people in this country believe in a woman's right to choose and are outraged at the thought of our right to reproductive choice being taken away. But the soaps need to ease into it and not bang people over the head and turn the audience off.
