PUBLIC LIBRARY Sixteen Logansport, Indiana, Fharos-fHtrane Telemovies Experiment Encounters Tough Time BARTLESVILLE, Okla. (UP)— Is America's first telemovies experiment heading for the rocks? The danger sign was hoisted today by officials of Video Theaters Inc., the promoters .. a unique test of pay-as;-you-see TV movies in this entire community with private homes wired for reception. "Frankly, we're disappointed," said Kenneth Blackledge, division manager of telemcvies, "but we're not giving up." Some of Bartlesville's 25,000 residents like the telemovies and don't mind plunking down -the $9.50 each month it takes to receive movies each day: Others were disappointed and about 40 cancelled subscriptions. Another sign that the experiment isn't going too well: Phil Hayes, local manager, resigned Monday over "policy differences" with the promoters. After three months of operation, telemovies has 553 subscribers- Hot enough to make a profit even in a small city like Bartlesville. Henry Griffing, president of Video Theaters, says ha is optimistic. "We're still adding connections although, of course, the rate is much slower than in the first few weeks after we started. This is the pattern we expected, and we are well ahead of the level we had projected before we started operations." Several residents said they subscribed because they thought only first run movies would be shown. Lately, they said, second run movies and short subjects have been substituted.
