was a hilarious travesty in which Jimmy played both prosecutor and witness and exposed himself, by the sharpness of his rough-shod cross-examination, as a terrible bum. The other a scene in which he is suddenly overcome with the appeal of a precious color scheme suggested for the decoration of his cell in the penitentiary. From which it may be gathered'! Set to the classic symphony of that name by Hector Berlioz, it seems to follow the composer's idea quite literally in depicting "an episode in the life of an artist." As said artist is "a young musician of unhealthy sensitive nature who i has poisoned himself with opium in a paroxysm of love-sick despair," the theme is definitely up the well-known Russian alley. Massine, still head and shoulders above his contemporaries, both as a creator of decorative dance patterns and in his own clean-cut technique, takes the leading role, Tamara Toumanova. who is developing into a prima ballerina of the first rank, is the fragile gal of his dreams.

2 45 BUTTERFLY Nest Penitentiary to help her sell the tickets. But that isn't the source of the most humor. The real source is the first prize of the lottery. It is to go to the lucky holder of a ticket who uncovers a sweetheart for whom the romantic hero has been searching practically all his life, a lady who was marked in her infancy when she inadvertently sat upon a hot waffle iron. Plot Suggestion.

This plot, you may see, has something of the licacy of the story that featured "Face the Music," when a physical imprint of similar nature was employed to track down a certain party. And there is a suggestion in the plight of the juvenile for whom the whole feminine world hungers of the love theme used in "Of Thee I Sing" and the campaign to put love in the White House. Mr. Freedley, being an observing showman, evidently instructed the Messrs. Crouse, Lindsay and Porter that inasmuch as the first act of any musical comedy is almost invariably the best of the entertainment to make their long and the last act short.

The first act of "Red, Hot and Blue" continues until 10:30, which reduces the repetitions necessary to carry the last act to the minimum and serves thereby to sustain the spirit of the evening. The jokes are a trifle punny, but the audience liked them that way. It liked Mr. Durante and Miss Merman, too. and was antvreeiative of Tuu.

Eve. Nov. 3rd. 15 Cavil lem it hacct other such burlesque as Vinton Freedley likes to see housed at the Alvin. It was written by the same trio that did a lot for "Anything Goes" back in 1934.

"Red, Hot and, Blue" is not, I think, as amusingly plotted as "Anything Goes," but if it misses the touch that is Victor Moore's it has Durante to supply the William Gaxton pep and Ethel Merman is again the singer of songs most popular with a numerous following. Ethel has two or three good numbers, one with Bob Hope, who is the romantic interest, called "It's Delovely;" one she sings with great spirit, called "Ridin' and a title song for the enterprise vhich I missed, being obliged to tear myself away that you might know this morning something of what happened last night. Amusing Lyrics. As usual with a Cole Porter icore, the lyrics are as important as the melodies. Casual, conver-fational, topical lyrics, most of them, including outrageous rhymes nl a touch of barbaric rhythms.

Why, Ethel demands in "Ridin' High," should she be afflicted with the vapors when she reads in the papers that Mrs. Simpson dined behind the throne? Hasn't she got little king of her own? The Crouse-Lindsay combination js still finding humor in what they fee in papers. Their whimsy this time concerns a Mrs. Nails Duquesne who organizes a Junior League Lottery and induces a parole board to let her borrow five ANNA LESKAVA MV-7Sr-oe Wit 1 HOP I EJ HILKINSHUBIRT Prrwnt. a ramrd, OWING YOUR I ADY BOOTH Thra 4i SI.
