But many of his worries about 'finding replacements have been dissipated already by the performance of reserve holdovers and brash young sophomores in pre-season drills. Last week, the Mountaineers knocked heads in a rough intra- squad scrimmage and Lewis got unexpectedly good work from 1949 reserves Stoner Parsons, Bill Valko -and Bill Bryant. Parsons is an end and may win a starting berth, Valko is a center and Bryant a Fullback. Sparkling also were Sophomores Joe an end.

Lewis will put his team through another tomorrow at W. Va. He's hoping there'll be no casualties- this time. Last Saturday, Quarterback. Bill Allen had three teeth knocked out and Halfback Bob Litten twisted his ankle.

That's the kind of scrimmage it was. Both Allen and Litten were out of action yesterday as the Moun- taineers worked 'on signals and blocking Jackson's Mill. Dick Loring replaced Allen at the quarterback slot. Elsewhere in the conference, Passer-quarterback Carroll Blackerby was sidelined for weeks at Wake Forest with the-recurrence of a collarbone fracture. Coach-Peahead Walker thus lost one of his offensive aces for two, possibly three, games at the start of the season.

Duke's varsity, ran on olfense against the freshman with Cox, Glenn Wild, Tom Powers and Billy Eanes getting off long runs. Clemson brushed up on fundamentals. Ray Matthews shone in passing drills. A long scrimmage was held at Davidson and Coach Crowell cats' timing. Coach Carl Little complained of the Wild- Snavely put his North Carolina Tar Heels through two routine drills.

A long scrimmage and signal drills in the afternoon marked N. C. State practice. Ed Mooney got off several nice runs. Richmond's Spiders took time out to elect Quarterback John Thomas and Doug MacLachlan, an end, as co-captains of the 1950 team.

At Williamsburg, Coach Rube McCray said William and Mary's Indians still "have a long way to go" after a rugged scrimmage session. Rain hampered workouts at Washington and Lee and Virginia Military.
