boring to that every person in Haven, and everyone within its rad us, ought to inter keeping the ITEM here. If tins the case, it behooves them to live. It can't do that without 4 certain and inflexible amount of cash, which it can only obtain by its business. Now, then, we must have more advertising patronage or I ore subscription money. There are some firms in town depend on chis commuwho inty profitable trade, that do Dot have line to represent them in the ITem, or to invite its readers to trade with them.

Therefore, we ask all who will to help 118 get subscribers. We have done reasouably well in this respect thus far, and have no complaint to make about the present circulation of the paper, but there are many men who would quiekly subscribe if someone friendly to the ITEM, and consequently to Haven, would suggest it to them. When times liven up, 8 Better general business will be done, and we can get aloug much easier in a financial way. Will you, reader, do what you can to help us spread the ITEM'S circulation and earn its livelihood No person can run a paper without some capital, and no one needs expect it to be done. To keep a aper here it must do a far, hving business.

That's the whole story--our bills must be met from the proceeds of our business, and if Haven will not do it, we must take Hutchinson advertising, or find a field that will pay us What do you -ay! We believe in Haven, and would like to pull for it only, but we must live while we do it People's Party Congressional Con- The People's Party Congressional Convention for the Seventh district has been called to meet at Hutchinson, Wednesday, July 25. Harvey. It is almost a toregone conclusion that Jerry S.mpson will be renominated, as there seems to be no opposition to him among the party, and no ambitious gentleman has been rash enough to signify his intention to contest with him for the nomination. It will be a mere for. mality as far as the nomination i- concerned. A Wolfish Business, with Money In It.

In these dull days it is interesting to notice that there is at least one business that is flourishing in Reno county. War on Chinch Bugs. ing held on May 26th, the minutes of which we unintentionally neglected to publish, the committee on Flag Pole reported the pole already procured. and on motion it was decided to have a picnic, pole raising and public speaking at Haven on Saturday, June 30th. The pole raising will take place at 2 p.m. A big time is looked forward to, and nothing but bad weather will prevent it.

At the Commissioners' meeting this mouth as a board of equalization, the assessment on farm glands in Haven township was raised from $5.36 to $5.484 per acre. They reduced the value in two townships and raised it in nine The highest was in Reno, 'which was assessed at $6.11, tne next highest is Lincolo, ($5.50, and Hayen is third. Grove is the lowest, at $2.334 per acre. Our friend Jacob Rau bas proven a relible weather seer thus far this month. Some time ago he predieted that June would be the wettest known for several yeas.

Up to date more rain has fallen this month than fell during either of the last two years altogether, and more than has fallen during any June in eight or ten years, A few weeks ago, when the drouth Was getting in its blighting and disheartening work, on crops and farmers, the ITEM suggested that plentiful rains would come as soon as the bricklayers begun work. The bricklayers came Monday and there have been six rains this week up to date. Dave Laughlin sold his 80 acre tarm last week to W. J. Albertson, who has recently returned to sas from the Pacific slope.

Mr. Laughlin may possibly go to the eastern part of the state, but more probably will not tear himself away from this wet section when he relocates. Many a man who has been sent to an early grave by dyspepsia wo'd have been alive today had he tested Ayer's Sarsaparilla. This no tem. porary appetizer, but a scientific remedy.

It makes life worth living to all who use i it. All "three subscriptions that begun with the firat issue of the ITEM expire with this issue. It will suit us to have them prompt. ly renewed. We have known worse papers than the ITEM sell for $1.50 a year.

The pay car relieved the financial stringency a little Wednesday, but none of the stuff has circulated far enough to reach us yet. F. H. Ebersole and family were down from Hutchinson Saturday, visiting Mr. and Mra.

The Universalists are planning a series of meetings to take place sometime during October. Minis ters from abroad will likely assist Miss Brant. Circumstances prevented Rev. H. Cummings, brother of the Pastor, from preaching in the Methodist church here Sunday, as announced last week in this column, and the pulpit was occupied by Rev.

Myers of Edmond, Oklahoma, who gave a very good sermon to a large congregation. The only religious serv ice at night was the Hutton lacher joint affair, which was well attended and highly appreciated. Rev. A. W.

Cummings, Pastor of the Methodist church here, who was Vice President of the Kansas State Holiness Campmaeeting Association last year, presided at the big meeting at Hutchinson Sunday. True to announcement the Hutton-Herlacher joint lecture came off Sunday night, and a large, and in the main, intelligent, audience gave them pretty fair attention. The Doctor tried to dream of a time when America--the United States -would lead the world in moral, religious and intellectual refinement, and gave forth a number of excellent ideas for those of his audience who could take them in to ponder over, and showed prfounder thought than the subject or the "subjector" had suggested. Rev. Herlacher followed in a brief tion in which he also expressed a sort of dreamy hope that the Church of The Future', might unitedly stand upon love of God.

humanity and right, and the malicious and un- Christian that now dominate very many, alleged followers of the Meek and Lowly Nazarene might be changed into diviner relations. Miss Lillian Poet presided at the organ, and the choir did some good singing. For some reason not explained thus far, Rev. Slater did not preach here last Sunday. Rev.

Wattenbarger will preach in the Congregational church here next Sunday, morning and evenung. He preached in the Congre. gational church at Hutchinson last Sunday morning. AYERS, SARSAPARILLA HAS CURED OTHERS WILL CURE YOU A Bright Lad, Ten years of age, but who declines to give his name to the public, makes this authorized, confdential statement to us: "When I was one year old, my mamma died of consumption. The doctor said that too, would soon die, and all our neighbors thought that even if I did not die, I would never be able to walk, because I was so weak and puny.

A gathering formed and broke under my arm. I hurt my finger and it gathered and threw out pieces of bone. If I hurt myself so as to break the skin, it was sure become a running sore. I had to take lots of medicine, but nothing has done me so much good as Ayer's Sarsaparilla. It has made me well and strong.

Byron Erwin took a hundred statements from our job Monday morning. We print such orders tor our customers they wait," and they don't have to wait long either. Our family have been dieting for some time. until Mra, Hutton sup plied them with a nice mess each of string beans and lettuce, which had a rather disa-trous effect upon the monotony of bread and water: Morris Cain, until recently local rustler for the Daily News, has become editor and publisher of the Hutchinson Headlight, and will give Reno county a real good dem.

The King of Italy eats but one meal a day it is said. There are soIre American sovereigns in some of the Coxey armies who have to skirmish considerably to do even that well. O. PARKS, Haven, Kan. The bricklayers have at last begun to raise the walls of the new and handsome block that soon will in adorn the south end of the burnt district. The prospects for a big corn crop were never better, and already the pessimistic farmers are worrying for fear it will not bring short crop prices.
