F. Dar by, while writing in his office, suffered an apoplectic stroke, and immediately sank into unconsciousness. He linger ed till late in tiie afternoon, when he breathed his last. His sudden death was a great shock to the community, and it seemed im possible to realize the fact. Mr.

Darby's wife died about three years ago. Ihere remain five sons G. of Howard; Fred, who lives at Eureka Charley and Ben at Kansas City, and Levy at Wichita. Mr. Darby was a good citizen, quiet, kind and cheerful.

He will be greatly missed irom Howard. A friend of the family furnishes us the loiiowmg OBITUARY. uiea, at nis home in Howard, on Friday, December 10, 1897, Mr. John F. Darby, after an illness of but a few hours.

Mr. Darby was born in Vermillion, Erie-co. Ohio, February 21, 1834. In 1855 he moved to LaPorte, where he was married to Rebecca E. Ransom on January 26, 1861.

In 1880 Mr. Dar by brought his family to Kansas and for two years lived on the farm now owned by Mr. Grant about two miles northeast of Howard. Later he was in the grocery business, and for some years back was a real estate and insur ance agent. Jir.

uaroy has been a man of very regular habits and has enjoyed unusu ally good health. In the morning of the day of his death he was engaged in his usual employment. About 10:30 a. while engaged in drawing up some papers in his own office, he was seen to drop his pen, and begin to stroke his cheek. He was asked if he was in, out was unable to give an ar ticulate answer.

Medical assistance was promptly summoned but he was utterly unconscious in a few minutes, He was carried from the doctor's office to his own home, where he lay till about 4:30, when without a struggle ne quietly passed away. Ihe funeral services were held in the M. E. Church and his remains were in terred in the Howard Cemetery, Sun day afternoon. Obediah Reddington, one of the pio neers of this county and an early set tler the Caney alley, died at his home in Greenfield township December 5, 1897.

We copy the following from the Grenola Chief Mr. Redington was born Indiana, January 13, 1837. Came to Kansas in 1869, and has been resident of this vicinity for the past 27 years. As a citizen, friend and neighbor, Obe Redington was the peer of any who have gone in and out among us from time he cast his lot with the sturdy pioneers, who have transform ed this beautiful valley from a wilder ness to a garden. In spirit he was a western man in the broader sense of the term, combining open hearted sym pathy with that deep regard for stern justice that has ever characterized the men of the Trans-Missouri country.

He had been afflicted for nearly four teen years with the malady that caus ed his death, most of the time being unable to walk, and for the last few weeks he was compelled to be in the open air almost constantly, most of the time being driven around in a bug gy both day and night. In his death the community loses a citizen of worth. He leaves a wife and five children, all but one of whom are grown. We have two or three times request- some of the family to furnish us data for an appropriate obituary of the late Mrs. Hannah Ann Greenwood, who died at her home adjoining Howard, the 3d but we have been unable to procure anything.

Mrs. Green wood's maiden name was Carter she was a sister of Mr. Tom Carter, of this place. She was twice married, her first husband's name being York. Their son, Newt York, lives here in Howard.

She married Joseph Green wood about thirty years ago, and they have raised four sons to manhood, one of them now living in Washington. The Greenwoods were among the very first settlers in this township coming here in 1863. Jos. Greenwood died a few months ago, and his widow suffered with a severe and painful illness ev er since, till death relieved her. The funeral services were held the 4th, Rev.

J. N. Young officiating. Mrs. Greenwood was a good woman, a kind and hospitable neighbor, and she will be greatly missed by her many friends.

Her age was about 55 years. An old man named Maus, who lives over near Upola, has been arrested and is now in jail on the charge of statutory rape, the girl being his own daughter and under eighteen years of age. The preliminary trial came off yesterday and the old man was bound over to 1 the district court. The girl and other younger members oi the iamuy are now inmates of the county poor house. The Mackaye Opera Co.

is a good troupe and gave an excellent rendition of "Said Pasha" at the Howard Opera House, Wednesday night. Their soloists are first-class, the chorus is strong and musical, the girls are pret ty, graceful and proper, and their com edians funny and chuck full of new jokes.
