Miner was called to the residence of Geo. Evans, east of Lockport, Monday night to see their baby, which was quite sick with tonsilitis. Twenty of the young people of Santa Fe and vicinity went out to the Lucas school house Saturday evening and attended literary. They report a good time. One party consisting of sevon girls with Ralph Bush as driver, took in the entertainment.

A young hopeful of Santa Fo was at a neighbor's recently when the lady of the house was talking of making an apple cob-ler. When the child returned home she created considerable amusement by asking her mamma to "use some of her apples to make a turkey. Judge Burnham, of the Ne braska, Kansas Southern, was in the city several days this week on business connected with the road. We received a letter from a party in Salem, this week asking for a sample of the Monitor, saying he contemplated the purchase of a tract of land in western Kansas, and thought a better idea of the country could be obtained through the county paper than any other way. Pat to day. County Attorney Fred Dunn returned from Garden City Sun day. W. II. George went to Garden City yesterday after a load freight.

Next Sunday is Easter. There will be some special service a Sunday school. R. G. Haley brought in a big load of freight from Garden City Monday evening.

Mike Nail, who has a home stead in west Haskell, came in Tuesday evening from Ford county. Mrs. juamie JMewoy ana daughter Emma returned to their home in southwest Gray county Friday. It we can escape Irom prairie fires for two or three weeks more, the grass will be too green to burn. Be very careful with fire or matches.

C. A. Otto and Phillip Sim mons, who have been in Walsen burg, for the past few months, returned Saturday and are now at home in west Has kell. Sharon, is not the only pebble on the beach. There was a child in Santa Fe last Saturday that had been stolen from its mother and recovered after sev eral weeks absence.

Two matched games of base ball Saturday. The Santa Fe second nine played Harwood 9 to 0, and then played Toluca 9 to 4. There was a good attendance, considering the weather. Jesse Buzzard, of Liscomb, Texas, came in last week and made his residence on his home stead northwest of Santa Fe. He went to Plains Monday after lumber to improve his place.

Work on the Catholic church is progressing very nicely, it is thought with two weeks more of nice weather the mason work can be completed. Geo. Dillon will help with the carpenter work. M. A.

McClelland, of Ander son county, an old friend of J. C. Gregg, of west Haskell, came out last week to visit his friend and take a look at our country with a view of locating. He likes the looks of our country allright. W.

N. Simmons was a visitor in town baturday and renorts things as looking pretty nice out hat way. He says some of the early wheat is not doing much, but the late wheat i3 all irood. le put out 240 acres for J. H.

Hett, of Marion county, who owns Section 16, which he thinks is about the best piece of wheat in county. S. Rinehart made a trip down the ranch Sunday, hi3 lirst visit for two or three months, see how things were getting along and inspect the house which has just been remodled. He has in 200 acres of oats and nearly 200 acres of barley, the rst sowing of which is coming up nicely. A good.

Custer were Santa Fe visitors Saturday ana vv. a. cauea around ana saw that his subscription to the Monitor was set up a year in advance. He told us of the re cent storm at his place which un roofed their house and blew off the wheel to his windmill. It was quite an exciting time for a few minutes.

There were eight of them in the house at the time seated at the supper table. It seemed as though the wind liter 11 any picked the house up and shook it, the roof was torn off and it was carried several hun dred feet before it struck the ground and from that on it was scattered for a quarter of a mile. The ceiling remained in tack and was very little damaged. Before the excited occupants could get any place for safety, the storm had passed over and all was quiet. The wind slid a heavy wagon sideways for more than a hundred feet, when it struck anotner current oi air ana was 1 1 4 carried in another direction for some distance.

The wheel of the windmill was torn off and broken to pieces. The damage will pro bably reach $200. It was bad enough but might nave been a great deal worse. The box supper Thursday night was largely attended and quite successful. The receipts amount ed to about $32 and together with some other donations made the neat sum of $35.00 to send to the hospital.

Before the sale of baskets Rev. Cox announced that all the money raised above the $21 to be used to purchase he braces for the little Quinn girl's feet, would be sent to the hospital as a donation. This an nouncement undoubtedly caused the people to be more liberal. There was considerable chagrin elt when it was learned that this was not done but instruc tions given to use most of the surplus funds for expenses for the girls. Geo.

W. BottorfF, living on J. S. Patrick's place northwest of town, has planted between nine and ten acres of potatoes. He had out a small patch last year and raised sometintr over sixty bushels.

We will have to crown George king of the potato growers of Haskell county. W. L. Wilder, secretary and treasurer of the Audit and Bond of St. Louis, here Mon day and made a contract with the county commissioners to audit the books of the county for the past fifteen years at $40 per year.
