11 III St. Sacrament SL MA. 1223 H- 23 Maritime Commission to Continue Company's Trans-Pacific Services TO PAY OFF CREDITORS Expenditure of About Expected as Ships in Need of Reconditioning The United States MaritimeCom-mission will take over the ships and property of the Dollar Steamship Line and continue the company's trans-Pacific and round-the-world services as a Government concern. Announcement to this effect in New York followed closely upon the report that the Commission would take over the ships of the Munson line, now in the South American service, and operate them between Seattle and the Orient. With the Dollar ships, the American Government will thus become one of the most important shipowners of the Pacific.

It is understood that the Commission contemplates the exendi-ture of about $4,000,000 for paying off the creditors of the Dollar company and reconditioning the ships. All of the latter, with the possible exception of the President Coolidge, are said to be in need of improvement. Later, the Commission plans to meet Japanese competition on the trans-Pacific run with the construction of three sister ships to the President Coolidge, which, with a speed of 20 knots, would provide a fortnightly schedule. For the round-the-world service, the Commission plans to build seven or eight cargo ships, with a sea speed of 16 knots. The ships which the Commission is taking over were purchased from the United States Shipping Board, in 1925 and 1926.

Dec. 49 50 58', 51 49 50 51 Chicago Grain Market Chicago, July 23 P) Wheat dropped another cent today and the declining market, dominated by a big 1938 United States harvest despite other day-to-day trade developments, was back where it was at the end of May. Prices flirted with the lowest quota tions in five years. Trade news was a mixture of optimistic and pessim istic crop comment, discouraging ex port business and uncertainty regarding the amount of new wheat which will be held off the market temporarily by Government loan acceptance However, there was nothing startling to excite outside speculative interest, in lieu of which hedging sales pre dominated and forced the steady, quiet decline. I he market closed at the session low point, with wheat to 1 cent lower.

G. A. Tomlinson. LONDON FEATURED BY DOLLAR, GOLD H'9hest Since APril' 1937 Heavy Turnover in Gold (Wireless to The New York Times and The Gazette.) London, July 24. Outstanding in financial London this week have been the rise of the dollar to the highest sterling value since April of last year and the largest turnover of gold in any similar period for more than a year.

The strength of the dollar developed despite repeated official denials that negotiations are or have been taking place regarding currency stabilization. Such rumors once started are difficult to arrest. They still persist in some quarters but gradually are losing their influence and are being replaced by other and more concrete factors. Among these most importance is being attached to America's large and steadily increasing export surplus, the continued European investment in the United States securities and the renewed distrust of European affairs. It became clear recently that, while authorities here and in Ihp United States are anxious that sterling shall not suffer from unfounded rumors of impending stabilization at something like the old parity, they are not disposed to offer undue resistance to the natural influences at present operating' against sterling.

It is fairlv clear that buying of dollars is now in Drosress on a considerable scale and that such demand is arising rather earlier man usual Because there are some who believe still that sterling eventually must eravitate tn ahnnt its old parity. It is, in fact, commonly ut-nevea mat tne united States is prepared to recoenize the fart that the dollar long has been under valued against sterling and that good joint policy would be to allow sterling to return to its old parity by easy stages. Had the British authorities wished to give sterling greater support than actually has been afforded they could have done so by allowing the premium at which the sterling price of gold has been maintained at the American parity to run off. This im-mediately would start once more arbitrage gold shipments to the United States and provide an effective offset to commercial and other demands for dollars. That they have not adopted this policy is regarded as clear evidence that the authorities here are not disturbed greatly by sterling's weakness and are giving only sufficient support to Drevent a mnr nnll ri.ni Yellowknife Annual Meeting (Special to The Gazette.)
