CK 9 -Oouverneur Morris. I This Magnificent Inglorious End of Company as Joint Stock Undertaking Tragedy of Finance FRUITS TO NON-RISKERS Not Unexpected in View of Way British Investors in Canadian Utilities Have Been Treated (By Canadian Press Cable.) London, September 8. "One of the greatest tragedies of Snance" Is the heading of the Pall Mall Gazette on the announcement of the Grand Trunk arbitration board that the common and preference stocks of that company are. in the opinion of the majority of the board, worth nothing. The Pall Mall says the business interests of the city of London were thunderstruck at the announcement.

The price nl the "junior issues" of Grand Trunk stocks came down with a rush. In Canadian circles in London, says me UaBotte, there is the "suggestion of a dole for the unfortunate stockholders, but 'compassionate, consideration' is surely a matter for tne Canadian Government." The inglorious end of the company, fays the paper, ts a juint stock undertaking Is one of the tragedies iinance. There are tangible assets to how lor money sunk in the undertaking, and it is those who took no risks who henceforth will reap any fruits. The 'Westminster Gazette describes the result it the arbitration as something of a bombshell. It appears, re-Tnarks that paper, that the question of any possible compensation is thrown back on the Government, It holds out the hope that it is not at all likely that this decision is the last word to the shareholders, and It is pointed out that the allusion which the chairman, Sir Walter Cassels intakes to "equitable moral considerations" can at least be inferred to mean that the door is not shut.

Indeed It should be remembered that the shareholders have the right to Appeal to the Privy Council from the decision of the board of arbitration, 1he Gazette says. The livening Standard says that, after the manner in which British investors in Canadian utility companies have been treated during the past few years, it was hardly tp be expected that any more consideration would be shown the Grand Trunk stockholders. However, if generosity wag not ex-peoted, says the Standard, It was tnought that justice would be done at, least. While stating that In declaring the ordinary and preference stocks valueless the arbitrators have elected to wve out capital amounting to The Standard admits that about two millions Is the real nominal value of this, and the fact of the stocks being worth anything i.i because "there are always people who are readv to gamble on a possibility." Sir Alfred Smlthers. chairman of the Grand Trunk Railway, when Interviewed today, produced a cable sent him privately from Montreal.

Chairman Smithers said, after reading this cable to the Canadian Press: "I can do nothing more until I get the full report of what these gentlemen said. Then I shall call together the shareholders' committee of which I am chairman -and we shall duly make recommendations to the general body of shareholders." The judgment of the Grand Trunk Hoard of Arbitration was the main topic of conversation on the Stwk Kxchange today, the cable to Chairman Smithers being prominently posted in the Stock Exchange building. British i Industries More to be Established in Canada, Says Ben Morgan Toronto, Sept.

8 Addressing two hundred representative men ftt the National Exhibition directors' luncheon today. Ben. H. M-organ. chairman of the Council of ir.e British Empire Producers' Association, said hm tour of Canada "would result in the establishment of mors British ind-ustries in Canada.

"I have been surprised at the advance in youn manufacturing skill," he declared. "Some of your exhibits cannot be excelled (by any country in the world," Mr. Morgan sketeht-d th troubles of Great Jir.ain, politically and fin ancially, and said tha the States was treating the British war indebtedness as if it were an ordinary commercial transaction before the -war, The speaker declared it would be a revelatiol to British statesmen of the Manchester school to tour Canada as he had done. It might, he aid, broaden 'them out a bit. "We are facing a more serious uation than we have ever had before in Canada," said W.

S. Fisher, St John. S.U.. president of the Canadian Manufactures' Association. Ho believed the situatioi could be re medled by Canadians ceasing to buy and Import non-essontiais and 'by giving Canadian goods the prefer ence.

That was the only way to help the Canadian workman. The heavy trade balance -in favor of the United States, he d. glared, was a severe handicap.
