9559 2137 Bleury St. MONTREAL LAST TRIBUTE PAID REV. DR. A.M.HILW Many Attend Service for Former Moderator of Presbyterian Church Here WORK IN CHURCH LAUDED Rev. 0.

Ritchie Bell Gives Eulogy and Praises Life of Noted Churchman and Scholar Friends and" fellow Presbyterian ministers of Montreal gathered yesterday afternoon at the First Presbyterian Church in Verdun to pay final tribute to Rev. Dr. Hill was a former moderator of the Montreal and Ottawa Synod of the Presbyterian Church In Canada and was widely known for his close association with educational matters. When first stricken with the Illness which caused his death, he was completing a tour of the church's mission guilds in the four western provinces and the Peace River District He returned to his home and was later admitted to the Ross Memorial Pavilion of the Royal Victoria Hospital. Speaking at the service yesterday. 'Mr.

Bell said, "While sorrow is our first natural instinctive feeling today we are all bound in thanksgiving to God for the -ife that Dr. Hill lived in our midst, and for the great and memorable work which he accomplished. From this pulpit for 18 years he exercised a unique influence among his own people and throughout this whole community. "Of his work for the Presbyterian Church in Canada, that church which he loved so deeply and served so devotedly, no words can express all he did and there will be other occasions when that great work of his will be naturally the subject of men's thoughts. His last illness came upon him while he was busily engaged in a visit of our western synods.

In this visit he has done our church an invaluable service. "But the debt owed to him by his denomination is chiefly that he brought to all our affairs -the gift of a statesmanlike mind, wise leadership, and especially was this true of his foreign mission work; he spent himsey without stint since 1936 as chairman of the General Board of Missions." WAS FORMER MODERATOR Dr. Hill was a past moderator of the Presbytery of Montreal and was chairman of the home missions committees of both the Presbytery of Montreal and the Synod of Montreal and Ottawa. Pieter Zeeman, 78, Nobel Prize winner in physics and discoverer of the "Zeeman effect," died in Amsterdam on Saturday, the German-controlled Netherlands station, Radio Hilversum, reported today. One of Holland's greatest scientists, Prof. Zeeman was famous for his discovery in 1896 of the "Zee-man effect" upen which he wrote many of his scientific works. The term is used to describe the phenomenon produced in spectroscopy by the splitting up of spectral lines in a magnetic field. In practical application, the "Zee-man effect" proved that there are powerful magnetic fields in sun spots and that the- sun as a whole has a magnetic field like the earth.

The phenomenon, study of which is known as magneto-optics, has been used by astronomers to study magnetic effects at the sun's surface. The Nobel Prize in physics was bestowed jointly upon Prof. Zee-man and his associate. Dr. Hendrik Antoon Lorentz, in 1902.

(JP) President Roosevelt said today that Japan has lost an average of 130,000 tons of shipping a month for the last six months, with American submarines taking heaviest "toll. This is believed, he said, to be considerably larger toan the enemy's replacements. The President added that if the rate of sinkings continues, it would total about 1,400,000 tons a year. In other statements on the war, he said: 1.

The American people, when thinking about gasoline rationing and what they have accomplished in production, should consider the statistics of American air raids on German objectives last Friday. He said 855 planes participated carrying 2,500,000 pounds of bombs. 2.750,000 rounds of ammunition, and 800 pounds of maps. They flew 850,000 miles, travelled 1,400 miles on the ground in taking off, landing and taxiing, burned nearly gallons of gasoline and used 25.000 gallons of oil. Each plane was over enemy territory from two to six hours.

Five thousand airmen participated. 2. He wanted to pass on a sug- E. J. WINTERS i i AN INVESTMENT IN QUALITY NEW BRITISH WOOLLENS Representing a complete selection of Britain's best Suitings and Overcoatings and we vouch for their quality and distinction.
