Having proved by his play in the C'nigrets, and afterwards, that no American player could contend with him on equal terms his friends were naturally dosiroiiB of seeing him matched against the ablest players of Europe and a committee of the Now Orleans club Invited Mr. Staunton to visit New Orleans to play a match for $2,500 a-Bide, offering $1,000 out of the stakes for his expenses should he loso. The challenge was not accepted. Morphy then determined to meot, if possible, the European players on their own ground, and set sail for England, where he landed on the 21st June, 1858. Arrived in London, he encountered and defeated in off-hand play Messrs.

Barns, Biid, Boden, Medley, Mongrcdicn, Owon, Hampden and Lowo. His first regular match was ployed with his old Hungarian friend, Lowenthal, with the result Morphy, 9 Lowenthal, 3 drawn, 2. On the 27th of August, at Quoen's college, Birmingham, he played eight simultaneous blindfold games, the greatest feat of the kind ever attempted in Europe up to that date. His next great triumph took place In France. He reached Paris on the 3rd of Beptombor, mid bis first antagonist was Mr.

D. liurr-witz, one of the finest players of Europe, who won the preliminary contost. A match whs then commenced for the first winner of seven games. When the score stood Morphy, 6 Harrwitz, 2 drawn, 1 Harrwitz, alleging indisposition, requested a postponement, but Mr, Morphy having at a previous bingo acceded to a similar demand, declined to permit another violation of the terms of the mutch, and Harrwitz rosigned. The grentest victory in his choss career came next.

On the 20th of December play commenced in his match with Professor Andcrsson, tho victor in the great Inter national tournament at London, In 1851. The result of this encountor, which terminated on the 28th of December, gave Morphy, 7 AndcrBPen, 2 Drawn 2. He then encountered Mongiedlen, with a final Ecnro, Morphy, 7 Mongrcdicn, 0 Drawn, 1, which terminated his match play in Europe. It is well known that Morphy undertook this campaign, more at the urgent request of friends than from any desire of his own. He nover manifested a disposition to make chess moro than a recreation after the more arduous duties of life.

Shortly after his return from Europe, at one of the magnificent organized in his honor, he spoke as follows "Chess never has boon and nevor can bo aught but a recreation. It should not be Indulged in to tho detriment of other and more serious avocations should not absorbe the mind or engross tho thoughts of those who' worship at, its shrine; but bo kept in the background and OBteined within Kb proper province 4 i more game, a relaxation from the ero pursuits of life, It is deserving of high commendation From that period, whether from lack of focnien worthy of his steel, or othorwlso, Morphy played very little chess. Immediately otter tho closo of tho civil war, in 1805, he visited New York with the purpose of preparing an edition of his gnn.es for publication, and at that tinio, Mr. Gilborg says, it would have been a freak of the maddest folly to have discredited his complete possession and control of that finely balanced intellectual organism which six years before had carried him triumphantly through his severost ordeals." So long as tho mind of man requires intellectual amusement, and so long as our royal sport remains one of these amusements, so long will the votaries of Caissa play and admire the games of Paul Morphy, The pride and ttie sorrow of Chess." 1 1 A If ON Tl 113 1 8S ION A It I ES I.lciit. Washington, D.C, August 11. Tho Post publishes the following remarkable Interview to-day Lieut. Wood, 8. of the United States coast and geodetic survey, now stationed in this city, has had excellent opportunities to observe the work ot American missionaries stutloned in China and Coria, having made a trip to those countries in 1881 on board the Trenton. It Is not extravagant to say, he said, that the work of the missionaries in China and Corea 1b absolutely ithout any result excopt to hold thorn up to the ridicule of the natives.

It has bo-fore been stated, and I concur In tho belief, thnt ihero is not a Chinese convert to Christianity of sound mind to-day within the entire extent of China." 'What about tiie list of converts we hoar of in this country 7" he was asked. "They are merely tho menials ernployod about the quarters of the missionaries, who, for a salary oi $4 per month, become converts. But when they are discharged there is nofuither evidence of 1 cliango of The missionaries do not mix with the nut i vps to any considerable extent, and many of their meetings aro not only in English, hut with tlio missionaries themselves as audience, As for a nobleman ot Corea or a mandarin of China ever acknowledglna: that faith, such a tiling was nover heard of." "How do tho missionaries bring them-sel ves into ridicule 7" "As a matter of fact, they are looked upon about as 1b the Salvation army In America, only to a degree ten times aB great, The hiiinninn, for Instance, has a respect for his largungu which umountB to reverence. Even a stniy piece of paper oovorcd with Chinese liBiacters would be picked up by them and humid. You will understand with what feelings llicy regard the translation of the bible the missionaries have prupared for them, vIkii yon know that this is lu a lingo which Simula in the same relation to tho mandarin tongue or clusslcnl languago of the country, which is used in court and is the olti-t liil language over tho country, that an oh-Kino negro dialect of Louisiana stands with the classical English, Although only the educated Chinese are able to use this Inngunge, they all have the same respect for It, and it Is in It that tho precepts of Confucius are given to tho people." "How did it happen this tulstuke was mnde?" "Simply because when the missionaries locate In Foo Chow they learned the lun-gunge of that locality, and, of oourso, could use no other, either in speech or to write In making a translation.

There Is a gradual change in the lingoes of China, wliloh is seen distinctly In a distance of 50 miles, but tho tongue of the mandarin is universally used by Uio educated and reverenced by every one." Her Majesty alone, by virtue of her royal prnrog ntlve, may order appeals to bo heard from the Supreme court. Of course no exhaustive tli Unit Ion Is possible as to the limits within hich appeals could be allowed, but, said bis lordship, "experience has shown that Brent caution Is required lu accepting Marcus for granting leave to appeal when not fully siibsliitillaied," In the presentence their lordships felt that the question of the i-xi mptloli of religions Institutions' from municipal taxation was of sui a nature ai to render mi appeal admirable. Ukrr flPRP iq iki fcii in Vwi 'wm: mm vrrw mimmkm III ml mm WHITB. White to play and mate in two moves. We teg to express our Bincere sympathy with our esteemed friend, Mr. J. Munois, in bis deep Borrow caused by tho death of his respected father, on the 31 st ultimo, at the age of 76 years.

The deceased gentleman at the time of his death was a member of the well known house of J. M. Ceballos and of Now York. For several years prior to 1850 he was Consul General of Veuezeula, his native country, at Havana, Cuba. Afterwards ho became financial adviser to the Venessucliun Government, up to 1R67, when he came to the United States.

He held the appointment ot Minister of Venezuela, at Washington, during the Presidency of General Grant. As a chess player he ranked as the bust in his own country, but he never practiced the game after his' arrival in Amorica, otherwise than by employing his leisure hours in playing over the games of the best masters, lie was the chess tutor of his talented sons, who are so favorably known as players, problematists, and patrons of our royal game. The Fraser International Correspondence Tourney has terminated, Mr. G. H.

Fraser, Dundee, taking first pri.o, and Mr. Harry, of Dublin, second. The Rev. G. M'Arthur, formerly of Boot-land, but now residing in Brooklyn, basjmf oined the Brooklyn Chesg club.

Ho is not alone a good player, but is tho composer of a number of excellent problems. A PATENT SIMPLEX AUTOMATIC TIIINO. To crack a chess-nut like the famous Kline Witand Wisdom says Smith recently invented a patent Simplex Automatic Problem-solving machine, which he presented to Brown, who is a chess enthusiast. Brown was delighted, as he was competing In a solution tourney, and could not master a difficult ninety-seven mover. He carefully followed the directions, which were Insert the diagram in the opening, and hold the instrument over the seat of thought, with slit towards the back of the head.

Think intently on the problem, and turn the handle three times. You will then receive the solution." To his amazemont he did receive it (a solution, apparently, of sugar in wuter) down the back of his neck. Can any correspondent give Brown Smith's present address? THE FIRST GREAT AMERICAN CHESS CONHRKSS. I the begining of the year 1857, Mr. Daniel W.

Fiske, M. editor of the Cheat Monthly, suggested the idea of a National Tournament. The feeling in favour of such a project became immediately so strong that the officers of the old New York Chess club felt justified in taking the initiatory stops to carry it Into execution, and a committee, consisting of Colonel C. D. Mead, president of the club, Frederick Terrin, W.

W. Montgomery, James Thompson, and D. Vf. Fisko, was appointed to issue a formal proposal for a general assemblage of American players. A circular having been issued and the responses thereto being favorable, It was finally determined to hold the first American congress in the city of New York, on tho (sixth day of October 1857, under the following.

C0MMITTKE OF ANAUKUKNT. Messrs. Charles D. Mend, Charles H. Stanley, Theodore Lichtenhein, James Thompson, W.

On the day appointed a large assemblage took place, in extensive appartments in Broadway, known as Descombes rooms, specially fitted up and elegantly decorated for the occasion.

The congress was called to order by Colonel Mead, and the following gentlemen, were elected officers of the first American, Choss. congress President The Honorable A. B. Meek, Alabama; Vice-presidents; George Hammond, H. Gallatin, New oik, Hiram Kennicott Illinois, and Prof.

The eight winners wore then paired off ns before, the four winners of the first three games being victors in the tecond tretitm, and entitled to the four pristes, To determine the order of the prises the four prize bearers wore then paired of)' against each other as before, each couple playing tho best of five games. The two winners then played a match for the two highest prises, the winner of the first live games taking first prlzo.
