HARVARD VS. KBIT ANSI A. 1 10n Saturday afternoon quite a large num ber of ladies and gentlemen assembled on the Cricket grounds to witness the football match between the Harvard University Club and the Britannia Club, of Montreal. Tbe afternoon was chilly, and at times the biting wind made the players and spectators shod- aer with cold, but the bracing and invigorating air only added zest to the sport of Kugby union football. The Harvard Union men are old friends of Montreal and Canadian footballers.

The first game of an international character took place in 1874 in Boston, when HcGill, cap tained by Mr. Dsv. Bodirer. was defeated in one trial by the Americans, the match under ianaaien rules Delng a draw. In the Ian of the same year Harvtrd visited Montreal and again defeated our 'Varsity.

The Montreal Club then encountered the crimson players here in 1875, with no better luck, and in the spring of 1876 an exception ally strong team fiom all Canada suffered the same fate at Cambridge. Again, in the autumn of 1876, did All Canada get beaten in Montreal, and tbe HcGill men also played Harvard, being likewise vanquished after a severe struggle, in which the Harvard captain had the misfor tune to break his leg. Last year McGill again visited Cambridge and lost the day. and last Saturday the Britannia Club were similarly treated in Boston. It will thus be seen that Canada must acknowledge her superiority so far as football Is concerned, and the reason for it is apparent.

The perfect training and confidence of our vif-itors is their strong point. They are under the complete control of a sagacious captain, whose orders they implicitly obey, while Canadian players somehow invariably display insufficient training and less thorough discipline. THI HATCH. At three o'clock on Saturday, then, the teams faced one another. The captain of the home team having won the toss elected to play with the wind, which was strong, ann the visitors kicked off.

At once the play began to be, what it con-tinned 1 to be, brilliant and exciting. To report it is impossible. Hither- and thither the rubber fled, followed by the crimson and blue athletes, the one speedy and sharp, the others strong and sure of grip. the hne play of the Harvard forwards or "rushers," as they call them elicited admi ration, and the steady work of the Britannias prevented any very decided advantage. In fact, the on'y point scored was a goal by Harvard kicked from the field of plsy.

We may say, for the benefit of those unversed in the mysteries of Bugby Union, that the score indicates even play, and although defeated. the Britannias played a careful game with good result. Exceptionally good form was shown by Messrs. Bacon, Cushing, Nickerson, Manning, Leather bee. Warren and Shaltuck, of the Harvards, and by Blaiklock, Low, Boss, stiller, Holland and Ssriret of the Britannias.

During the last half hour of the game the Britannias plsyed with fourteen men against fifteen, one of their players (P. S. Boss) having had the misfortune to strain severely one of the sinews of his right leg, and was thus compelled to leave the field. After tbe game the Harvards gave nu.e 11 rahs" for their opponents, who, in return, gave three rousing British cheers for the visitors. The umpires and referee, Messrs.

Houston (Harvard) McGibbon and Esdaile then came ia for a united cheer and the teams separated. In tbe evening the visitors were entertain ed at the Gymnasium and yesterday were driven through the city and park. hasvabd vs. n'oru. The two 'Varsity teams meet this morning on the Cricket Ground, and the Harvard team leave for home this evening as they play Tale and Princeton on their return.

LACROSSE. ATBLCTICS VS. ISDIfSHD 5TS. The match on Saturday afternoon between the Independents and the Athletics was attended by very few spectators, the cold dusty weather rendering a comfortable seat at the fireside more to be desired than a seat on the Grand Stand of the Montreal Lacrosse Grcnnds, even to most enthusiastic lovers of our national game. The match, however, was well worth seeing, the Athletics strag gling gimely to wrest from the Independents the coveted honor of the junior championship.

The result proved, nevertheless, that the steady practice of the Independent team during the season bad kept up the efficiency ot the twelve, and notwithstanding the desperate play ol tbe Athletics, three straight games were scored for the Independents, who thus retain for the present season their title. RIFLE COMPETITlOSf. An interesting rifle match took place on Saturday last at the Point St. Charles Bauges between No. 1 Company, 6th Fusiliers, No.

a Company, 1st (Prince of Wales') Rifles, and No. 3 Company, 5th Fusiliers. As will he seen by the appended score, tbe contest was a keen and exciting one. The challenge was issned by the 6th Fusiliers, who succeed ed in carrying off for the prize a barrel of meal and a barrel of flour, to be given to some of the charitable institutions. The following is the score No.

Loanos, November Whilst recent activity in the erode iron trade of Cleveland continues only slightly diminished, there is considerable animation springing up in manufacturing trades. At Stockton the malleable iron works have added to the nam bar of puddling furnaces in use, and it is expected that in a few days the Bowesfield works will also increase their output.

At Wit ton Park there is very great activity, and both there and the large Loo-making centre of Consett, the productive faculties of the works are now fully taxed, while at Middles-boroUKb. the large Britannia works, which have been some time idle, are about to commence in pars. Very large orders for shipbuilding iron have been placed by local and Clydeside firms, snd one or two orders for bars and other kinds of manufactured iron have seen booked by Teesdale firms for America. Already the Eose berry steel works have been started at Middlesborongn, the first in the sown in which the Siemens open-hearth system has been used. FLOODS IS SPAM.

A bill was recently passed empowering the Post Office Department to collect trade promissory notes, but it had no power to take legal proceedings in case of nonpayment of the bills, which were forwarded to their owners. Mr. Cochery proposes to place that power in the hands of the post office auworities. This reform is expected to quadruple the number of promissory notes and bills confided to the post office for collection. -The number has already attained to Very considerable figures for example, it is estimated that during the first five weeks of the application of the present law, no fewer than 132,000 bills, representing in value nearly 3,000,000 francs, were confided to the postal authorities.

Of this sum they collected about 1,000,000 francs, the remainder being returned to the owners aa unpaid it il maid that if the postal authorities had power to take legal proceedings, nearly all paid bills would probably have been cashed. Many trsdesnven, moreover, hesitate to confide their bills to the Postoffice Bureau in case of non-payment, they loss the time taken up In returning them, the legal delay during which prosecution can be taken.
