Tho room was heautifully! decorated. Immediately behind the Chairman1 was a life-size oil painting of Her Majesty1 Queen Victoria taking the Coronation Oath this was neatly draped with flags; on eaoit side of the room were tastefully arranged tho flags of various nations. The dinner was a splendid one, and was provided by Mr. Shcp pnrd. Every possible delicacy was to be found in any quantity.

Shortly after eight o'clock tho company, numbering about eighty, including the guests, sat down. Col. Wily, commanding the Montreal Volunteer Rillcs, occupied the Chair, supported on his right by the guest of the evening, Capt. Hill, and by Captain Evans, of X. 1 Company of Rifles, (who formerly commanded No.

,) and Mr. James Haylev. On tho left; of the Chairman were Cof. Krmatingcr Inspecting Field Officer for Lower Canada! Brigade Smith, Lieutenant Bronsdnn, (No. 6,) Ensign Smith.

Colonel Wily, in nron'osing the next UMr.r. said ho did so with umch pleasure.

The deeds of the British soldiers speak more cloqurntly thaii words. They have carried tho red cross banner into every -corner of the earth, and whore it waves, there can be no slavery, every man is free. Those who stained the virtoriea ofod, have found worthy comrades in thou who (ought at Alma, and at lukermaiiu. Af ter forty years peace it was thought that the British soldier of the present dav would not be found equal to the emergency, lint, that opinion has now passod away. Let us turn back to tho bleak heights of tikermaim on a cold, misty morning in November, snd thint now the British were surprised hyi a force overwhelming in nud how thov drove them hack into the valley hulniv.

There was no generalship thoiv. It British pluck that did it. Hill, the guest of the Cimipnln'. (Great cheering.) He was glad fo be prow nt anil witness such an exhibition of good fooling and cordial working between ofticors and tin n. In a force like the Active Mililia of this Province, where there Is no pressed men, it is nocosnarv for the Captain to have the conlidence of his inen, without which it was impossible that a Company would work well. The complimentary dinner which they were row giving to Capt. Iliil showed what confidence they had in him.

He (Cul. Will was an old soldier, and, like most of them, lejii with one eye open. He had watched the of No. 0, and the conduct of its officer), and would say that Captain Hill deserved all tiic confidence they gave him he (Capt. Hill) wai a tord Captain, who did his duty, and he (Col.

Wiir) advised the Company to retain him as Joiif as po-si- blo. He would call upon Color Sergeant Pitman now to come forward and do his duty. Color Sergeant Pitman then rose and said Captain It is with unspeakable pleasine that on behalf of the non-coiniiiipsioneU oflicoi and men of No. Rifle Company, beg your acceptance of this cup as a token of our appreciation of the great interest you have always manifested iu the welfare of the Compauy, since you first started with it as our Lieutenant and also to show our ureal respect and esteem for you as our present Captain. i i. u-utuii, im- idling nuu nicu i wa9 rocviveu upon becoming your Captain, are events which still live, and will live in my memory. When 1 look round and see so many hero ho wernamonp; the lirst to join this compauy, I feel forcibly struck that there is a feeling of brotherly love, .1 unanimity of opinion, a determination to act in concert and stand by each other, that gives life and vigour the company: and when I look aeain and see many of the picked men of other corapauies who have left their ranks to join us, I am, thoroughly convinced that wo possess that within "which passeth show," and which will make us truly powerful should we ever he called, upon defend our adopted couutry, and the flag of old England, and England's Queen, from dishonor, cither fiom foreign foes, or in civil strife. It is alEO a pleasing reflection to know, that thoja who have withdrawn from us. have" done to from causes beyond their control some have left tho city, and a few others whose ideas of duty and ohc- uience were such as prevented them from attending our regular drills, or giving that attention In our affairs which was required, but ot, I am happy to say, could I discover, who has left anger, or with any thing bordering on ill-will.

And if wo only continue to maintain that good feeling which bag heretofore existed between tho otlicerg and the men, although numerically No. ii will be indeed No. I 1 haro on more than 0110 occasion board tint opinion that some of our superior officers have formed of us, and as they were men who had seen service can judge what a soldier BhoiJd Ix-, Knowing their opinion of you, I assure you I faul proud to be Captain of such men, and while 1 linld that honor, will do all in my power to forwaid your interest, and keep up the character of that magic No. 0. Should it please God to spare my life to lie an old man, and my fortune permit me to nip my Burgundy, or, mayhap, my whisky toddy, I will remember as I stretch my legs before the ptnve, and bury my nose dwp in the recesses of thTs goblet, the days of my youth, and of the noble and generous hearted follows of No.

fi and as a beginning to my intentions, permit me to drink health and happiness to every individual member of this Company, praying God to help you all. Colonel Wily then proposed the health of Baron do Rottenburg. He said since that gentleman became connected with the Volunteer Force, he has done all he could to promote its success. The Province is fortunate in possessing such a man to be at the head the Militia Force. He is not only an oflicer, Imt is a soldier, which was not always the case.

This toast was drank with much enthu siasm. Song Lot me like a Soldier Fall," by Caplain Evans. The health of Col. the Hon. Ceo.

to tne very source and oasis ot ail eruptive, ulcerous, tnmerous, and cancerous diseases. It extin guishes the febrile principle that feeds them, and the outward symptoms fade, heal, and pass away with a rapidity incredible to those who have not witnessed it. i SCKOFTJLOTJS ERUPTIONS ULCEES, Tbe poison of scrofula has never been neutral ized or expelled by any of the remedies of the pharmacopeia. The sole antidote to this viru lent and destructive element is Holloway's Ointment. Majendie and Brodie, tbe great French and English surgeons, do not deny or dispute this great fact.

There is no form of scrofula that may not be controlled and cured by this balsamic remedy I I CAKCESS AND TUMQES. The knife or caustic may remove a cancer or tumor, but the seeds of tho terrible lexcrescence remain in the blood, and it is soon reproduced in a worse fotm than bsfore. Hollowayfs Ointment, on the contrary, penetrates into the icirculation, and pervades every infected vesicle, and kills the disease by destroying the corrosivo principle that generated and sustains it. i INFLAMMATIONS 0F; TEE SKIN. All rashes and ordinary eruptions, as well as ERYSIPELAS, ACNE, RINGWORM, CARBUNCLES, SCALD HEAD.

Quebec, 1st October, 1856. Montreal, Oct. 4, 1856. John Ross, Truro, Nova Scotia. Sib, In compliance with your request, I beg to state that I used your Metallic Paint and Ar- tificial Slate in covering the stations and sheds of the Grand Trunk Railway between Longueuil and Sherbrooke, in 1852.

1 have seen those erections lately, and the material seem3 to resist the action of the weather well. Your Paints have a good body, and I believe they possess the quali ties described by your circulars. I have also used the Fire Proof Paints" manufactured in Ohio," and have no hesitation in stating that they are worthless as compared with your manufacture. Yours respectfully, William Lloyd, Pointer, Great St. James Street, Montreal.

Gas Wobks. Quebec. 29th 1856. Joes Ross, Truro, N.S. bib, 1 have used your Patent Metallic rain upon my roofs and other iron materials for these two years past, and find it to answer the purpose of preserving the iron from the action of the at mosphere, and can therefore recommend it as a.

Co. CERTIFICATES Halifax, 14th July, 1856. Sib, In answer to your note of the 12th inst. consider the use of your Artificial Slate Paint" on shingled roofs, as greatly diminishing the risk against fire. I have frequently reduced the premiums on buildings in the country upon its application.

I am, fair, your odd t. Archibald Scott, Insurance Agent. John Ross, Halifax. NEW AND IMPORTANT TO RAILROAD PROPRIETORS. Messrs.

Thompson 4 Oudesluys Gentlemen affords me great pleasure to testify to the excellency of. Ross' Colchester Metallic Paint, supplied by you for this Company's use. I hare used the Durole. and tried it extensively for 12 montb.3 on the cars, iron rook, and bridges of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company, and can safely recommend it for that kind of work to be eood as any 1 nave ever Gsea. nave never tried it fairly on wood, but have every reason to believe it will suit any kind of work, and for body and durability it cannot oe surpassea.

Daniel Lebson, Foreman Paint Shop, Baltimore 4 Ohio R. R. Co. Mount Clare Depot, Baltimore, Oct. 14, 1853.

Mr. J. B. Jordan, who has used this Paint lareelv on the line of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, says it is the best of the kind he has i ever met with, and he has tested a number of kind3. Baltimore, October 11th, 1852.

Messrs. Thompson 4 Ocdesluts, Gentlemen have used the Ross Colchester Purple Metallic Paint, purchased from you, on the decks of the ships Powahatan and Isabella, belonging to this port, and after a trial of twelve months, find it the best article of the kind for the decks of vessels I have ever met with. Yours respectfully, William Graham. Harper's Ferry Armobv, October 18th, 1S53. Messrs.

Thompson 4 Oudesluys, Gentlemen procured from you some years since Ross Colchester Metallic Paint," and used it on a metallic roof at Fort Monroe. I found it to answer well, and during the year it was under my observation, it bore exposure to the weather that climate. From this favorable result, I wa3 induced to try it on the metallic root3 of the large workshops at this place, iu the full of 1351 and spring of 1852. These roots are now well covered, and the workmen report it superior to any similar paint heretofore used. I have also used it extensively in painting the exterior walls of brick buildings, for which purpose it seems to answer very well.

A longer period of time would of course test its durability more fully. With my present experience (about two years) of it, I am of opinion that it is economical and useful. Very respectfully your obdt. servant, i Benj. Huseb, Col.

U.S.A. Com'g. It is used on the "Collins' Steamers," and has given entire satisfaction. LYMANS, SAVAGE 4 Agents for Montreal. Montreal, October 8, 1866.
