Hie sitter's interest in art and history is well known, its major expression of these tastes being evidenced in the W. H. Coverdale Collection of Historical Canadiana and the Audubon prints at the Manoir Richelieu, Murray Bay. Miss Shackle-ton, whose paintings and drawings have been shown at "the Art Association of Montreal, has on occasion travelled far for her material, a commission seven years ago taking her to Coppermine, on Coronation Gulf, in search of striking Eskimo subjects. Other works done were portraits of Hudson's Bay Company pensioners.

Charles A. Bennett. The most important thing for a young man is to establish a credit a reputation, character. John D. Rockefeller.

A man's true estate of power and riches, Is to be in himself; not in his dwelling, or position, or external relations, but in his own essential character. H. W. Beecher.4 I believe the true road to preeminent success in any line is to make our self master of that line. Andrew Carnegie.

The devotion of thought to an honest achievement makes the achievement possible. Mary Baker Eddy. What men want is not talent, it is purpose; in other words, not the power to achieve, but will to labor, Bulwer-Lytton. 2 MILLION SET ASIDE FOR B.C. FISHWAYS Contract Bids for Hell's Gate Salmon Project Scheduled for Study Vancouver, August 4.

Contract bids for construction of automatic fishways at Hell's Gate on the Fraser river are acheduled to be considered by the International Pacific Salmon Fisheries Commission at its three-day convention which opened here yesterday. Cost of the project is estimated at $1,000,000 but the Canadian- and American governments have set aside $2,000,000 for the work. Utilizing a gradual slope rather than the traditional steps found in fishways at Bonneville dam on the Columbia River, the construction is believed the only type of It-s kind in the world. The project presents a special difficulty as the Fraser River at Hell's Gate rises 'and falls more than 100 feet in a season. The mass of water on this slope would be broken by vertical concrete "baffles" or ridges built in from the walls of the trough in a staggered or alternating pattern.

Milo Bell of Seattle, United States engineer, who designed fish ladders for many dam projects, including Bonneville, is in charge of the project which must be finished by March, 3945, when salmon come up to spawn. Work at Hell's Gate. 135 miles from the mouth of the Fraser River, will involve removal of about 45,000 cubic yards of rocks, rearranging another 50.000 yards, and construction of reinforced concrete fishways on either side of the river. Since a landslide in 1913 narrowed the passage the annual spring salmon run has been falling off. It is estimated that had the 1941 catch been as great as the one in 1913 it would have yielded instead of $8,000,000.

Completion of the spillway Is expected to restore the yearly run. YEARLY ECHOES TODAY FOUR YEARS AGO August 5, 1940: First service flying school opened in Canada. Canada's outlay for first year of war reported as near one billion dollars. Attack within two weeks expected in Britain as Germans speed plans. THREE YEARS AGO August 5, 1941: Singapore strongly reinforced with British and Indian units.

U. S. sends two heavy cruisers to Australia "training cruise." British warships raid Italian sea bases in Sardinia. German attempt to encircle Kiev and upper Ukraine forseen. TWO YEARS AGO August 1942: Berlin has trial air alarms.

Public warned of increasing raids. Premier Gerbrandy of Holland radios message to Netherland saying 'war tide is starting to turn" and "to await the moment when the call comes from here." Cripps offers India status of ally and post-war self-government in return for cooperation. Britain repudiates Munich accord. Post-war frontiers of Czechoslovakia not to be influenced by "changes in and since 1938." Caucasus push, advances but Enemy Action Takes Toll of Works of Art Famous Pointing by Richard Wilson Belonging to the Tate Gallery Destroyed London. Information reaching The Times is that Richard Wilson's famous painting, "The Destruction of the Children of Niobe," belonging to the Tate Gallery, was destroyed earlier this year in an air raid.

This picture, which measured 46 in. by 66 was bought from Wilson by Sir George Beaumont, who presented it to the nation in 1S26. A water-color sketch for it is in the Victoria and Albert Museum. Wilson painted this subject, which showed him in a grandly imaginative mood, more than once, and happily some of his other versions survive. That which has now perished has.

however, generally been considered to be the first version. Another version was painted for the Duke of Cumberland, and exhibited at the Society of Artists in 160. and a third was sold to Lord Stafford. The Times also records other loss of art treasures by enemy action as follows: It can now be revealed that in air attacks earlier this year, in which high explosive and incendiary bombs were dropped, many art treasures stored in London were destroyed and others were recovered later. King street was severely damaged.

The premises of Spink and Son, Limited, Frank Partridge and Sons. Limited, Thomas Lockett Barbizon House), and Robinson and Fisher were destroyed or damaged. All the stained glass on the r.orth side of St. James's Palace and the windows of the Chapel Royal were blown to pieces. Some damage was done by blast.

The windows of Chatham House, St. James's Square, were damaged and the London Library also suffered severely. Blast also damaged the St. James's Theatre, where shows were interrupted, and windows, walls and ceilings at the Oxford and Cambridge Universities Club, Pall Mall. The value of the irreplaceable art treasures lost has been variously estimated at between 250,000 and 500,000.

Treasures of a similar ralue were recovered. Five days after the attack an estimated loss by one firm of 75.000 to 100,000 was reduced to about 30.000. In one room at Frank Partridge and Sons. Limited, which with its contents was destroyed, were two Adam cabinets and a cabinet given by Queen Anne to the King of Portugal. The firm's greatest loss was of porcelain, including some of the Ming dynasty.

Frank Partridge said that pictures valued at 200.000, owned by Admiral Lord Louis Montbatten had been saved from a cellar in which the property of many clients had been stored. Among them were a Franz Hals, three Romney's, and a number of Van Dyck's. Also saved was a collection of Rembrandt etchings and Lord Lothian's collection of pictures, including a Holbein portrait of Henry VIII. A tapestry belonging to Lord Halifax, a battle scene, was recovered undamaged. At Spink's extensive damage was done and Greek antiquities were buried.

The picture gallery, which contained a number of famous works, escaped. The premises of Robinson and Fisher were levelled. Art Works for Nation London. Sir Robert Witt, presiding at the -annual meeting of the National Art-Collection Fund at the National Gallery, said that since the society's formation 40 years ago it had spent over 500.000 in acquir ing works of art for the nation. The total number of acquisitions to date, 1,347, comprised not only works of art purchased by the society but many, and of great value, which had been presented through the society.

It was a result with which nothing achieved by any society in Europe with similar objects could compare. Work of Robert Bevan Recalls Past Years London. The Lefevre Gallery, bombed out of its quarters, has opened new premises on the first floor at 131-134 New Bond street. Its first exhibition here consisted of paintings by the late Robert Bevan and drawings by Keith Vaughan. To anyone who can remember the London art world of 35 years ago, writes The Times, the 30 paintings by Robert Polhill Bevan (1865-1925) will bring back memories of the Camden Town Group, in which he was associated with Sick-crt.

Gore, Gilman, and some others, of whom Charles Ginncr is today, one of the few survivors. Bevan had most success with certain pictures of London cabhorses, and of their attendant horsy human beings, rather gawkily drawn and suffused with a curious blue light. Three things of this type, of which "The Cab Yard is perhaps the most characteristic, are included in the exhibition, and there is also a street scene, "From the Artist's Window," in much the same style. But the pictures on view (which, incident ally, have been recently cleaned and look very fresh and new) show that Bevan's work varied a good aeai in manner, and was influenced in varying degrees at different times by his English colleagues in the Camden Town Group and by ine rench impressionists and point-illists. Some of his work (for ex ample, "Hemyock Bridge, has the formalized drawing and clear-cut use of flat areas of bright color of an effective poster, and sometimes this quality degenerated into sneer crudeness.

on the whole, it is a lack of subtlety which seems to make him a less notable Dainter than, say. Gore or Gilman. His horse pictures, however, certainly i i i -i i iidve mui viuuaiuy. Keith Vaughan is a vounir oaint er, who has been in the army since 1941. and in an interesting foreword to his section of the catalogue he tells how he has managed to work during his years in the service.

His drawings show so many influences of Picasso. Klee. Henry Moore. Graham Sutherland and John Piper among others that it is difficult to disentangle the real Mr. Vaughan.

His work, however, gives the feeling that something of his own may one aay emerge. Paintings By Epileptics London. An exhibition was opened at Foyle's Gallery, 121 Charing Cross road recently, consisting of 82 pictures painted by boys, between 13 and 16 years of age, of the Ling-field Epileptic Colony. Oils and poster colors have been chiefly used on a wide variety of subjects, writes The Times. The work began three years ago in an attempt to find something to interest the boys, and has now developed into a successful piece of occupation therapy.

All the pictures, painted over a period of one year, compare favorably with other children's work. In some cases they have required prolonged concentration unusual in children, as in "Moonlit Trees," a study in oils by William Treeby. "Self Portrait," by Alfred Smith, also in oils, and an imaginative "Bird Design" by Bernard Carslake. All the work is done out of school hours and is produced from imagination or objectively. No copying is encouraged, and every boy achieves his own easily recognized style.
