ACTIVE ARMY CASUALTIES some spiders live under water a great deal of the time. How can that be? The answer is that those spiders take air down under the water with them! Water spiders, as they arecaled, spin webs in the water of canals tant trick usually a sound enough, basis for a game bid. In this case, however, it was not in South's province to make that sort of decision! The four diamond bid should have been allowed to reach North, and North, the last to speak for his side, would bid four spades if he thought four diamonds might make, or double if he felt so inclined-South's great error was in the position of his bid. After many trips, the water spider turns its web into a kind of balloon. The air under the web rises, and makes the central part go up. The web now takes on a shape which has been compared to a bell. The web, with air in it, also has been compared to a thimble. Perhaps this is a better idea, since it is of small size.

Small as it is, the air-filled home of the water spider is large enough to hold the spider and her young. She lays eggs inside, and waits for them to hatch. All the while, she breathes the supply of air brought down from the world above. Water spiders cat insects which they capture in the canals and slow-moving streams where they make their homes. They are good swimmers, and can dive.

When thoy go from the surface of the water down below, they usually cling to the stalk of a water plant. A common spider may live a short time under water, only a few kinds can stay alive long without going to the surface. One kind, found in the ocean, makes its nest in coral reefs, above the low-water mark of the tide. When the tide S. II I) C.

In fact, he was rather bitter on the subject of what would have happened to East at four diamonds, doubled.

He accurately pointed out that East would have lost two spades, two trumps, and two clubs, thus going down 800. "But how could I tell that you had all those diamonds?" South asked piteously. North glared at him. "That's Just It," he snapped. "How, indeed, could you tell? unless you gave me the chance to say so!" And there, in a nutshell, was the full answer.
