Wagner. John, Rfn, L64071, Karl wagner (lamer), Marmncn, Sask. According to Culbertson Duplicate players often marvel that on a certain board one declarer has managed to take two or three tricks more than the rest of the field. Well, here is one sound explanation: South, dealer. East-West vulnerable.

Match point duplicate. NORTH C. KQ 10 5 II. A 4 3 I). 832 C.

7 3 WEST EAST S. 7 3 S. 6 2 H. 9 7 H. 10 8 D.

Q6 I. 1 0 7 5 4 C. 10 9 4 C. A 8 6 2 SOUTH S. A 9 8 4 II.

6 5 2 T). A 9 C. 5 At all eight tables South became declarer at afour spade contract, usually via the simple bidding; one spade by South, three spades by North, four spades by South. In every case West opened the club queen and East captured the king. The club return was ruffed, the outstanding trumps were drawn in two leads, and seven declarers then finessed against the queen of diamonds.

Sometimes this proved fatal "to the contract; in other cases 10 tricks still were made because these particular South players then took another finesse against the diamond 10 instead of tryin" to drop that card in straight leads. The eighth declarer, like the others, saw that if the diamond queen lay exactly twice guarded in East's hand (he already had played VAuj I rLC vex. Ottawa, July 23 W) The R.C.A.F. issued Saturday its 942nd casualty list of the war, containing 73 names and including six men killed or. active service overseas and B0 men missing on active service after air operations overseas.

Therefore, he decided to use a safety play for the contract itself. He continued with the diamond king after the ace, intending, if the queen did not fall, to enter dummy and lead toward the jack. He was rewarded lavishly when the queen fell from West, since he then could enter dummy, finesse freely for the diamond 10, and discard a heart from dummy without giving up a diamond trick.
