But it seems to me to havo a very poworlul enemy in Mr. Blake, and by far tho more powerful that his enmity appears to bo concealed.

may bo denominated concealed, because the public have been led to believe that ho will respoot the protective tariff. In fact, taking his declaration all in all, it Is impossible to doubt one of two things oither Mr. Blako is utterly unaware of tho results of tho changes ho proposes, which as a shrewd man and clever lawyer appears Impossible, or ho is the secret enemy of tho National, Policy. Certain it Is to there who know, that tho results of his declared Intentions, if oxocutod, will prove him its most dangerous one. A correspondent who lias just returned from a business trip through Nova Scotia, writes that the most reliable Information points to the election of at least 1 and possibly 17, Government supporters in that Province.

Halifax will send two, Capo Breton two, Plctou two, Annapolis, Colcbostor, Dig-by, Gtiysborougli, Hants, Kings, Lunenburg, Shulburno, Cumberland, and Victoria ono each, while the contest in Queen's and Yar-mouth will bo closo. Prince Edward Island Is likely to be divided, sending three Censer, vatives and three Liberals. Tho Conservatives are working energetically in Quebec Centre and milking a very thorough canvass on behalf of their candi date, Mr. Bosse, QC, and nulesB a lavish ex penditure of money is mailo by the Bongos, bis election is regarded as assured. Tho contest in Quebec County and Quebec West is not serious, the Libeiul candidates being placed in (ho field to make a mere factious opposition, and thp lato members, Hon.

Messrs. Caron and McGn evy, will have sub. stuntial minorities. The only counties which tho Liberals uro at all likely to carry in tho Quebec district mo Quebec East, Megan tic, Kimntiski and 1, 'Islet, and they will havo to light desper ately hard to retain these seats. The latter county, L'Islot, would have been safe for re.

demplion beyond peradvontiiro, but for the fact that for some days three Conservative candidates were in tho field and two have gone to the poll. The Conservative vote will far outnumber that cast for Mr. Cas- grain, the Liberal candidate, but may be so divided as to give the election to the latter. Kamouraska will be an led by the Con servative candidate, Mr. lilondeau, whose friends are well organized and working Mr.

Deksaint figured as the Liberal candidate until it was discovered that he hud not a shadow of a chance, when he was pushed aside for one Bouchard, a horse, pork and butter dealer, from Lower town market' Quebec. But the latter Is proving to be even a weaker candidate than Mr, Dessaint. Mr. Vallee will obtain a majority of more than 250 over Dr. St.

George in Portneuf. Tho Liberal candidate, it will be remembered) opposed Mr. Angers in Mtuitinugny In 1880, when he was defeated in every parish in the county, and be realizes that lie is now lead-ing forlorn hope in opposing Mr. Vallee. Mr.

Landry, iu Montgomery, will receive re-election without much dilliculty, but the contest in DellecbasBo, between Messis Amyot and Pacaud will bo close, both sides claiming a majority on the canvass, Hun. Dr. Blanchet expects a majority of more than 200 iu Levis. The Liberal candidate iu Beauce, Mr. Lemieux, was badly beaten iu Bonaventure by Mr.

Tin to in the local elections of 1878, and Mr. Bolduc expects to ad. minister another defeat on the 20th by 400 or 600 majority. ORiND I1BMONSTIUTION IN TORONTO. Toronto, June 16.

Tho announcement in the papers that Mr. John Gray, the great Canadian orator, was to speak In the national amphitheatre, on the Issues Involved In the present political contest, drew to gether an Immense audience this evening. The weather looked threatening all day and evening, but many thousands were assem- bled when the chair was taken. The speaker was Introduced by Mr. Evans, the chairman, in most flattering terms, and received a great ovation in coming forward, Ho spoke about tvo hours and a half, discussing In detail the National Policy, the boundary and disallowance questions, the financial administration and records of tho two parties, tho Northwest policy and tho Canadian Pacific UallwAy contract.

His marvellous memory In dis cussing, without notes, so many questions requiring statistical exhibits was a subject of great admiration. Mr. Urav has it powerful voice and line delivery, and is master of all subjects which lie undertakes to discuss. His speech was a great effort, and received wuu unbounded applause. It was, in fact one oi the great features of the campaign.

Mr. my resumes Ids Western canvas to. morrow, speaking in Brant, Victoria and Ontario. The cry of victory for the Liberal-Conservative party rosouuds all along tho line. The contest will dlBposo of Radical.

Troy, Hutchison, T. J. Gillespie, vpposmon, There will be contest In all the counties Dominion issues are tutoring Into the coir tost to some extent, The tei'jslble strength of glass Is between 2,000 and 0,000 pounds per square Inch, and the crushing stientith between 0,000 and 10,000 per Kjuaro Inch, a Qrit journal In the country has apparently tet diseovered that nineteen Conservative anil ouly oue Liberal were elected, by aecla- matijn on Tuesday. The retirement of Mr. Fisher in York, N.B ruakes the victory certain for Hon.

rafter, the Ministerialist candidate, Fisher has issued an addroe to the electors of York, in which he pays An honorable reconciliation having taken placo between the divided wiugs of the Liberal-Conserva tive party, and having in view the hiiihcHt interests of the party and its success at th approaching election, which, In a triangular contest, would be more difficult of accom plishment, I have, after consultation with many of my friend, concluded to abandon my candidature, so that by the united strength of the party being centred upon one candidate, victory may be achieved and York redeemed." Oue of the hottest fights of the campaign is proceeding in Westmoreland, New Bruns wick, the county represented for the past twenty-five years by Sir Albert Smith, who can fairly claim the distinction of being the most over-rated man in public life. Sir Albert is in the possession of plethoric monoy bngs is emptying them freely, and may retain his seat by this aid, but his re-election is by no means certain. Mr. Josiah Wood, tho Conservative candidate is the wealthier and most influential man in the county, has won over hosts of former sup. porters of tho Knight, and is enthusiastically supported by the advocates of the National Policy, protection having caused the establishment of many new industries in Mouctuu.

Tho vote will be a clotc one, and we are led to expect the election of Mr Wood. Tho probabilities are that the position ol parties will be about exactly reversed in New Hrnnswiik after Tuesday. When Parliament whs dissolved there were lour New Brunswick members supporting the Government, and eleven opposing it. The Government have already carried Victoria and Northumberland, and on the 20th expect to win Albert, Carleton, Kent, St. John City Westmoreland, Gloucester, Ilestigouche and Charlotte.

There will be a keen fight in Sunbury and also in St. John City and county. New Brunswick will, relatively, do better for the Government than any Province in the Dominion. Although the prospects of defeating Mr. Anglin in Gloucester are necessarily impaired by the fact that he is opposed by two Conservatives Messrs.

Burns and Turgeon, we learn that the election of tho latter gentleman is quite safe. The French vote constitutes a clear msjority in the constituency, and it is expected that Messrs. Anglin and Burns dividiug the rfuglish vote will enable Mr. Turgeon to slip in. It is much to be regretted that the Conservatives are not united upon a single candidate, as in such a case the defeat of the ex-Speaker would be a foregone conclusion.

The opposition to Sir Hector Langeviu in Three Rivers is of the most frivolous character, and the result simply of petty spite. The lriends of Sir Hector, however, are organizing so as to make his triumph as complete as possible. A statement made by Sir John at St Thomas, was to the effect that he had been informed by the chief contractor for the last section of the Canadian Pacific, between Lake Superior and Winnipeg, that within a week from this date the last rail will bo laid be tween the two points. This completes the route from Prince Arthur's Landing through to a loig way past Brandon. And yet some people abuse the railway policy of the Government.

The industries which Mr. Blake and the GriU are particularly down upon are the Nova Scotia coal mines, the sugar refineries, cotton factories, woollen and knitting mills, and iron manufactories. Following is a list of the number of people employed in these industries, and whose families are dependent upon them for a livelihood INDUSTRY, HAKDtt. Nova Beotla coal mines 4,000 Canadian sugar refineries I.I1D Cotton factories 8,010 Woollen and knliting mills Manufactures from Iron 8,1 25,055 The Grit candidates have not been alilo to discover precisely what Mr. Blake's policy is.

Thtrefore, to get nicely around It, they shout in chorus, "I am in full accord with Mr, Blake." In the comic opera Prince Lorenzo says, jubilantly 11 1 have a Mascot. I don't know what a Mascot is but I have one." At the manufacturers' mass meeting In Toronto, on Tuesday night, Mr. Thos. Wll son, formerly President of the Keform Asso. ciation of Dundas, said that for thirty years he bad been a consistent Reformer.

But during the regime of Mr. Mackenzie he had found the trade of bis establishment, where the largest boilers In the country had been built, dwindle down to nothingness. At the time of Mackenzie's downfall he had but ten men In bis employment now ho had between Sixty and These were bard facts, and he didn't see much need of saying anything more. But lie might add that the wages he had paid under Mack curie's Government were from $125 to $1.75 a day. Under th present regime be paid from fl.7Sto$3 00 aday.

In the Orit ranks every man bas a policy of bis own. There is "Mr. Blake's policy," which the people are asked to support, with out knowing very well what It Is. And there Is Sir B. J.

Cart right's policy, which, as everyone is aware, has been identified with great loss lo th treasury, and injury to the public credit. Then there is the policy of Mr. John Charlton and Mr. Wm. Listowell, June 8 NOMINATION IN C0MPX0N. RnlhaalnHtle reception of lion. Mrj Poie A Ki-tnt victory Hur-t. FROM OUR OWN CooKsiiiRK, June 13, 1882. Tho nomination for this county took place to-day, and poor W.

Cairns was led, reluc tantly, no doubt, lo certain slaughter. The Hon. Mr. Pope made a telling and exhaustive speech, ami was lustily cheered by over one thousand of ('omptoiis hardy sons. From what 1 saw, I should say that the Pope men wero about 10 to 1.

McLean, of Montreal, a tall, overgrown, rank Libeial, endeavored with the usual Orit slung to impugn the mo- tives of Ministers in respect to bringing mi he elections, but most misoiably fallfd It wan amusing to hear him dissecting the fis- al policy, lie lloundered like a sucker out of water. His peroration was about us In II- liant us the first few words that fell from his Immaculate lips, an.1 ho finally subsided as good a it as when ho began. 1 ho member-elect tor tiherbrooke, Mr. Hall, had quite au easy task to convince tho honest and intelligent electors of Cmiipton, that tho (lire misgiving of Mr. McLean, as to the coming financial cinsu, were just about as truo as tho rest tho lubbish vomited fortli upon every occasion, by these would-be Liberal statesmen.

Mr. Hall quoted the last annual statement of our first monied institution, and clearly demonstrated that at no time iu our history was Canada more prosperous, contented and happy. One tiling that struck me Is this. I have listened attentively to all tho Liberal speak-era, both here and in Slanstcad, and oue and all seem bent upon Impressing upon the luhoror and mechanic the geimi of the pernicious doctrines of Pronshonn, and the French Socialists. Thus it Is, and history is ouly repeating ltselL such Liberalism always degenerates into license, and that of the most appalling and sinister form.

Thank Qod that Canada possesses a population throughout her magnifi cent townships, both Catholic an I Protestant, who, hand in hand and shoulder to shoulder, will, on the 20th of June, stamp out and crush tinder their heels, as If It were the serpent's head, such pernicious and dangerous teaching, and contido their interests to the safe keeping of men like Pope and Collry, who stand second to none In the great conn-ell of this Dominion. These simple Grits urge, principally as a reason why Messrs. t'uirns una uider should be elected In the room of Popo and Colby, that thoy have been In Parliament 10 yours, which our great Urlts consider long enough. Now, If this he the new (lilt rule, Messrs, Mackenzie, l.ocluinl, liourassa, Huntington, Ac, 4c, ail infinitum, must make their lacit bow to the public and mi'. These poor bewildered (lilts are spouting politics from the rising oi tho sun till it sots, and yet show a most profound ignorance of parliamentary history.

Why, sir, it Is well known that both in England, and even in this Canada of ours, some of the most able, brilliant ai patriotic statesmen that ever the world pro. ducod, have served in Parliament 30, 4) and evon DO years I And I have not tho slightest doubt that John Henry Pope, should ho desii It, will remain in the House of Commons as M.P. for Compton as long as his valuable life is spared (o his country. And this, I can vouch for It, Is the sincere dusiro of nine out of every ten men in that noble county of Cumptou, As a result of vivisection, in cases of epileptic till proceeding from Injuiy to the brain, surgeons have been able to localize tae Injury, and, by trepanlnrf, to remove It whereae, prior to the researches by the vlvlsectlonlsts, the trepaning, if done at all, wai done at random, It has also been of great use In enabling tho profession to Indicate the locality of put In the case of an abscess in the brain, or the situation of a tumor, N.
