Mr. McClelland of McClelland and Stewart, commenting on the current publishing business in Canada, said most Canadians are eager to maintain their nationality. "This is an extremely nationalistic country, from British Columbia right through to the East Coast," he said.

"This strong surge seems to have escaped federal politicians, and is my personal opinion that unless the Liberal Party changes its attitude it is destined to go out of power. "Prime Minister Trudeau is not a nationalist," he said. This desire for a strong independence from the United States has led to. an intense interest in Canadian books and writers, he said. Joseph' de Maisonneuve hospital. Since election to his CLC post in 1968 he had spent much of his time in Ottawa although he maintained a home, in Montreal, Mr. Rancourt had been actively identified with the labor movement since he came out of the RCAF in 1946 and joined the Amalgama'ed Clothing Workers of America as orgnnizer. For a time he was editor of the Amalgam-ated's journal. Previously, he had been with the Textile Workers' Union of America in Montreal and at Druramondville.

He became president of the Montreal Labor Council before the central body amalgamated with the Montreal Trades and Labor Council. Subsequently, he was elected secretary of the Quebec Federation of Labor, a pDst he held until his e'ection as executive vice-president of the CLC. Throughout his career, he favored a policy of freedom for union trembers His attitude rega-din? Ti'it'-cal parties persisted al he had been a provincial organizer for the CCF party and. its candidate in Maisonneuve riding during the 1945 general federal election. He leaves his wife, the former Yvette Gagnon, and a daughter, Jocelyne.

The still was apparently not yet operational. talks set today The Building Service Employees International Union, bargaining for 2,000 workers in private hospitals, has plied to the Quebec Labor Department for conciliation. Union negotiator Aime Go-hier said he also opens contract talks today with officials representing management of nursing -homes and institutions for the aged.

The Quebec government Is represented at the bargaining table by health, education and social welfare department officials. The private' hospitals' previous contract expired In September, 1968. Talks early last year but. were later suspended whi'e the union negotiated a province wide contract. It had beeii agreed the private hospitals would wait until labor contract conditions were settled across the proving.

Mr, Gohicr claims the private hospital negotiators have been seeking concessions in the proposed grievance procedure. They want at least 10 grievance. The unions want parity rates for all employees with those that apply to large institutions. It was decided to request conciliation when management proposed an adjournment to mid-February. RODIER Wing Commander Paul G. Rodier, a pilot in the First World War and a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force in the Second World War, died here yesterday in his 81st year. Wing Commander. Rodier served overseas in the First World War as a pilot. During the Second World War he was aide de camp to Air Marshal William A.

Bishop of the Royal Canadian. Air Force. Before and after the Second World War, Wing Commander was an executive with the Howard Smith Paper Company, retiring some years ago. He is survived by his son, Pierre. His wife, the former Madeleine Taschereau, predeceased him.

The funeral will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. Leon de Westmount Church with burial in Cote des Neiges Cemetery. No M-wave for U.S. TV OTTAWA (CP) State Secretary Gerard Pelletier said yesterday microwave relays will not be used to carry U.S.

television programs to Calgary, Edmonton, Regina and Saskatoon. In a written Commons reply to questions by Richard Southam (PC Qu'Apelle-Moose Mountain), Mr. Pelletier said the Canadian Radio-Television Commission had announced a ban on microwave usage for importing American TV and this applied to all parts of Canada. 40 tenants summoned by Outremont Some 40 Outremont rent-payers have received court summonses for refusing to pay the city's controversial tenant tax. The Outremont Tenants Association last week voted to stage a protest demonstration in front of Mayor Pierrs Des Marais' home, but no date has yet been set for this march.
