Dubbed "Operation Spider Web," the exercise began with the battal-; ion personnel being transferred by helicopter from Lejeune to the amphibious assault ship USS Guadalcanal. On the second day's maneuvers, the men again were transported by helicopter and taken where they conducted anti-guerilla warfare exercises 1 This landing aboard the Guadalcanal is the first combat type operation for the ship since its commissioning early in 1963. Navy, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Craggan, 49 Alberta Keans-burg, recently participated in a display of anti submarine warfare methods aboard the destrover USS Ingraham for members of the Saudi Arabi Royal family, militarv officials and American Embassy officials near the Red Sea port of J.d-da. The guests witnessed the firing cf various anti submarine warfare aircraft rockets and depth bombs, a barrage of anti-aircraft fire from the destroyer's five inch guns, and the Navy's new anti-submarine rocket-propelled torpedo. On USS Shadwell U.S. Marine Cpl. Merle uelson. son of Mr. and Mrs.

Independence visited two famous Italian ports in November, stopping at Genoa Nov. 9 through 18, and calling at Naples Nov. 28. During their stay at Genoa.

Briggs, Hazlet, is being reassigned to Seymour Johnson AFB, N.C., following his graduation from the inrhnical training course for United States Air Force inventory specialists at Amarilk) AFB, Tex.

Airman Briggs was trained to order and account for supplies ana equipment through the use of punched card accounting machines and electronic data processing equipment. The airman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Warren R. Briggs, 3 Robert Hazlet, is graduate of Rantan Township High School.

On Assault Carrier Salvamr A. Brunetti. seaman. U.S. Navy, son of Mrs.

Violet C. Brunetti, 425 Bayview Union Beach, is serving aboard the amphibious assault carrier USS Valley Forge, a Pacific Fleet unit presently being modernized at the Naval Shipyard. Long Beach, Calif. A former aircraft carrier. Valley Forge was commissioned in 1945.

She saw action during the Korean lonllict. Alter id years ui khi duty, which included new programs auch as her 1960 participation in an Operation Mercury shot. Valley Forge was converted to an am- phibious assault ship at Norfolk, in March 1961. In this role, Valley Forge uses helicopters both for reconnaissance, and as troop. Serving On Submarine Robert J.

Anglev, fireman. S. Naw, soi, of Charles R. Anglcy sr 9 Euclid Ave Keansbtirg. is serving aboard the submarine USS Piper, which recently participated "Exercise Midlink VI." an oper.v ton involving Naval and Air Fore-: 01 0' the Pakistan, the United Kingdom, Iran, and Turkey.

During the allied maneuvers, Piper operated out of Karachi, Paku tan, in the Arabian Sea. Upon completing the exercise. Piper spent Thanksgiving at Djiboir.i, French Somaliland. In early December, she rejoined the Sixth Fleet and resumed integrated fleet operations in the Mediterranean A diesel powered submarine. Piper is a member of Submarine Squadron Two.
