WEDNESDAY, ATJG-UST 28, 1940 DAILY COURIER. CONNBTLLSVILLB, PA. PAGE SEVEN. Softball THE SPORTING WORLD Baseball BOXING CHAMPIONSHIPS, TRACK MEET ON LABOR DAY SPORTORIALS GOLF AS THE REAL PROFESSIONALS PLAY IT (Editor's Note--The following communication, addressed to Jack Kelly of West Perm Power Company, is -written by Ralph Tyler ol Scottdale, who with Jack, promised The Courier Sports Editor John Whoric to provide copy for a golf column during the latter's two-week vacation This is Ralph's first contribution It conies from Hershey) Dear Jack Well, here we are on the ground for the 1940 A event Your having written such a swell column unaided for Johnny Wboric the past week has properly shamed me--so I'll see -what I can do lor you and The Courier this week To begin with--this Hershey club course measures 7,017 yards, which is, roughly four miles as the crow flies With even the pros failing to hit them exactly as the crow flies a good guess as to the walk lor IB holes would be five miles In other words the winner and the runner-up will have walked 60 miles--exclusive of the trips to the bar--which is quite a 3Ob in itself even without the golf Add io that the autographs he must sign, the 25,000 quick smiles and gleams of recognition he must show for Joe Doakcs, et aL, who met him once 10 years ago, or who has a fnenc who has a friend who knows him and the necessary patience for stampeding, noisy gallery--and you have reason the winner (yes, and even the second-best man) is a mighty tired boy by Sunday night, and ready, as Halph Guldahl did a couple ol years ago to go to bed for a 24-hour nap I played this club course the last time on a hot August day in '38 The back-breaker is No 3 hole, a long uphill climb where --thejairway steams and the bounces back in your lace The boys are all thankful the weather turned cool and there was remarkable little grumbling about the rain today Slamming Sammy Snead tipped as being "right" for this one It certainly is suited to his long style. But while I like mm a lot I just can't get the feeling that this is his show just yet He's due and he's got everything his favor, but I dunno Wha I principally like about him is his golfing disposition I saw him four-putt the tricky 12th green a Spring Mill He didn't bat an eyelash when his third putt didn' drop just quietly walked up anc tapped his four-inch fourth inti the cup and quietly walked ofl th green And the four putts weri not the result of the lump comin, up Sammy was gambling ant he didn't bellyache when his be lost Maybe next year-- maybe th year after shall be Sammy jears but not this one, is my opinion which I hope is wrong if you can figure that out This course is the longest th A has ever been played its 23 years of annual competi tion but that isn't the only featur which makes this one of the hard est in the country Tms layout cursed with clover, practicall unknown to Pleasant Valley Coun try Club imt growing in deep luxurious abundance in this goo soil.

And the traps are tricky And there are only five par five which would even strain our Mi Castle to reach in fou strokes ioofc for a lot of dis couragely high scores Msnay an Tuesday I still say the total purse $15, 000, is not enough. The v.um gets $1,100 They could give nm a little more although he'll mak plenty on the side throughout th year, but the losers don't get nca enough for the punishment an the mental stress subjected to They give a good show and de serve more I don't think on club Hershey or Oakmont Field Club or the One O'Cat Nine Hole Club should make any mcne from the A or the Open, "hold anything out The entire receipts or profit should be turne over to the boys It's all in th best interests of the game Tru top-flighters have good year when they'll make $20000 'ibso- lutely top) but the rest of Uie boys, make the show and the widespread interest possible have the majority among their number who will net less than three or four (thousand) pec year And their e'Jpense is heavier than people think Back to Snead again I saw Bunjon beat him 1938 at Shaw nee but if they meet uny- where alane th" line this jear, little Piulie is due to i bad trimming though little poison i considei ed ds good a BITS HERE AND THERE Sammy Angott is a 1 to 3 over Fritzie Zivic tomor- ow night at Forbes Field, Pitts- urgh Zivic's only chance is to ip the Washington, Pa, lad in he early rounds The highest ee ever paid a for a ingle victory was the $20 000 anded Georgie Ellis for piloting 'ictorian to triumph in the 10 000 Agua Caliente handicap 1930 Add bad moments There were 59,068 fans in Cleveand Stadium watching the In- lans play the Chisox Julius olters, Chisox outsider, came to at.
