Control Drug Induces Fertility in the Barren By RICHARD LYONS Science Writer of THE NEWS Atlantic City, April 5 A result of birth research by American and European scientists has been the discovery of drugs that, paradoxically, make barren people fertile, THE NEWS learned today. A dramatic side effect of the drugs is to increase 10 or more times the normal expectancy of twins. with an occasional case of quadruplets. Experiments in U.

S. Experimental use of the American-made drug clomiphene citrate by infertile women in the U. S. has helped 200 to have babies. Twenty of these mothers had twins.

European gynecologists are testing two other types, which are hormones extracted from humans and horses. Dr. Carl Gemzell of the University of Upsala, Sweden, said the hormone extracts have aided 25 of the 50 wives to whom they were given. Twelve of the women bore twins or quadruplets. "Most of these women are SO desirous of pregnancy that even the prospect of quadruplets doesn't deter them," he said.

These drugs also are being tested as blocks to the onset of cervical cancer in women, and for regulating the menstrual cycle. The Researchers The leading American researchers are Dr. Olive W. Smith of Brookline, Dr. Robert W.

Kistner of Harvard and Dr. Robert B. Greenblatt of the Medical College of Georgia. Dr. Smith is credited with discovering in 1959 that an experimental drug that was a contraceptive in animals had the reverse effect in humans.

Clomiphene citrate is a derivative. A major cause of infertility in women is their failure to ovulate, that is, release eggs from their ovaries. The drugs have been successful in bringing about ovulation in more than three-quarters of the women studied. In Pill Form The exact action of clomiphene citrate is uncertain but it probably aids the release of sex hor. mones.

It is taken in pill form four or five times a month. Multiple births have occurred because the ovaries of women taking the drugs may be overstimulated and many eggs released and fertilized at the same time. The drug also is being tried on men who are infertile. ADVERTISEMENT Still taking a "Slow Motion" Laxative? Many people assume that a laxative must take six to eight hours to bring relief. And it's true that many laxatives -pills, gum, medicated chocolateoften take that long.

But not Sal Hepatica! Sal Hepatica is the fast -acting laxative that's made to help you start feeling better right away. It quickly sparkles away gas pain, heartburn, and sour stomach due to gastric aciditv- which most other laxatives ignore. Then it speeds on, as only a fluid can, to relieve constipation and the sluggishness of irregularity -quickly yet gently. Usually in less than two hours! Next time irregularity puts you in "slow motion," don't settle for one of those "slow motion" laxatives. Take sparkling Sal and start to feel better right away.
