Wednesday Evening, December 4, 1957. Smithsonian Will Get VTOL Plane WASHINGTON'- Bell Aircraft Corporation's jet-powered VTOL (vertical-rising) airplane will be preserved in the National Aeronautical Collections of the Smithsonian Institution here.' The revolutionary craft -has been delivered to the 1 National Air Museum Restoration Facility in Sil ver Hill, Md., where it will be maintained until completion of a n.ew museum exhibit hall sched.- uled for construction. The vertical-rising plane was bhis country's first VTOL designed to take off and land in conventional- horizontal position. It is 'he forerunner of the jet X-14 which the Bell Corp., whose main plant is near Buffalo, N. Y., has built and is test-flying for the Air Force. Bell president Leston P.
