It was about the first time the officials were wearing numbers. "Sure enough, middle of the first quarter Southern Miss is offside and I called out the guy's name, Mr. I'll call him Smith; I don't remember who it was, but then I did for sure. "He looked around and he was impressed.

He said, 'Scott, I've got Southern Miss offside. You want the penalty or you want the "Right before the half we get a questionable pass interference penalty. And as the guy who called it goes by the bench, Coach Bryant yells out, 'You no-good Georgia Tech-Atlanta bleep bleep "I was standing beside him and I said, 'I guess my memory course isn't worth a durn now." It was heavyweight champion John L. Sullivan who supposedly said, "I can lick any man in the house." Meet John Sullivan and his twin brother, Mike, who play football for Ohio State. John will start at outside linebacker tonight against Alabama in the Kickoff Classic and Mike will see plenty of action at nose guard.

Coach Earle Bruce's eyes light up when he talks about the. battling brothers from' Timberlake, Ohio. "They like to play football," Bruce said. "They're the kind that'll fight you off the field as well as on the field. They've gotten into some little scraps, not provoked by them, but normally they hold their own." Mike won the Ohio Class AAA heavyweight wrestling championship in 1985 and John finished third in 1983.

"We had their brother, Mark, who played middle guard for us, and he was that kind of a ballplayer, all over the field, a wrestler-type guy," Bruce said. "Wrestlers are dttierent. iney really compete. They live differently They think they can lick the world." Washington's first game is against Ohio State on Sept 13, which means the Buckeyes not only will have played a game, but will have practiced Vk weeks longer than the Huskies. Bruce thinks that every college football team should start on the same date, but he knows he is a voice in the wilderness.

"Nobody really cares except the guy who's behind," he says. Last year, that was Bruce. "A good Pitt defense fought us to a standstill and we looked terrible on offense (Ohio State won 10-7)," he remembers. "They had a two-week head start and a win under their belt when we played them." Ray Perkins has done a fine job of keeping the emotional aspect out of his team's preparation as much as possible. The pick Alabama 21-14.

No. 3 Miami, Fla. (favored by 13) at South Carolina: It will be Carolina's new Run and Shoot offense against the Hurricanes' Pass and Shoot in a game that could last forever Miami 31-14. Toledo at No. 11 Florida State (no line): So what if the Seminoles are looking ahead to Nebraska? Warmup City Florida State 45-14.

Georgia Southern at No. 13 Florida (no line): Call this the Bald Bowl. Georgia Southern's Erk Russell has no hair at all and Florida's Galen Hall doesn't have much. Florida 42-7. Early season picks not easy to make By The Associated Press Tonight's Kickoff Classic marks the second meeting between Alabama and Ohio State.

On Jan. 2, 1978, Alabama thrashed Ohio State 354 in the Sugar Bowl in a classic coaching matchup between Bear Bryant and Woody Hayes. Courtesy of Scott Hunter, who passed for more yards than any Alabama quarterback and is now a sportscaster In Mobile, here's a Bear Bryant story: "We were playing Southern Mississippi in 1968, the second game of the season and my first start at Alabama. He comes over to me before the game starts. I'm sitting on the bench, nervous, and he gives me the program which was rolled back to the officials.

"He says, 'Look at this thing, boy, and memorize the numbers of these officials. Any edge we can get that way might I took them back Sports By The Associated Press GOLF COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. Last year's runner-up, Tom Messenger, defeated Dennis Sullivan, also 1-up. Both are from Colorado Springs, Colo.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL ELKHART, Ind. (AP) David Rivers, the leading scorer the past two seasons at Notre Dame, will remain in the intensive-care unit at Elkhart General Hospital at least one more day, the hospital announced. A prepared statement issued from surgeon, Dr. Kirby Gross, said the 21-year-old from Jersey City, N.J. remains stable.

Rivers, who was injured seriously early Sunday in an traffic accident, could remain in the hospital for up to 10 days. BASKETBALL WASHINGTON (AP) Brian Tribble, charged in connection with the cocaine intoxication death of basketball star Len Bias, has been linked to a gun slaying in northeast Washington, according to papers filed in District of Columbia Superior Court. Briefs The court papers also say that Bias was in Tribble's apartment shortly before the athlete died June 19, indicating police may have cleared up some of the mystery of Bias' movements in the early morning hours of that day. FOOTBALL SAN DIEGO (AP) Gene Klein, former San Diego Chargers owner, is entitled to press his $33 million suit against the Los Angeles Raiders and Raiders managing general partner Al Davis, a judge has ruled. Klein filed the suit in January 1984, claiming he was a victim of malicious prosecution when Davis and the Raiders named him as an individual defendant in the Raiders' antitrust suit against the National Football League.

LOUIS (AP) Cliff Stoudt, a former Pittsburgh Steelers backup to Terry Bradshaw, will attempt now to occupy that quarterbacking role with the St. Louis Cardinals behind Neil Lomax. Stoudt, 31, was to begin a tryout today at Busch Stadium before St.

Louis Coach Gene Stallings and personnel director Larry Wilson. If the Cards like what they see, they may try to make a deal with Pittsburgh for his services. Stoudt has made it known he has no desire to return to the Steelers, who made him their fifth-round draft choice in 1980, after spending two seasons in the United States Football League. St. Louis on Tuesday created a possible opening for Stoudt when six-year veteran Scott Brunner, the backup in 1985 for Lomax, was released along with eight other players.

"I understand it puts pressure on the guys we have here. They have to wonder why we are bringing in someone else," Stallings said of Rick Mclvor and rookie Kent Austin, the Cards' quarterbacks behind Lomrx. "But there's pressure every time they step on a field. We have to do what's best" Stallings labeled the task of releasing Brunner along with three other St. Louis veterans one that made it "the only day I've been in St.

Louis that I didn't want to come to work." "Scott's a class person. All these veterans are. But my philosophy is that if a guy is not really pressing a starter for a job, I'm going to go with a younger player," the Cards' new coach said. "I didn't feel like Scott was going to have a good offensive football team, he's going to have to produce. "I've told Ronnie I expect him to challenge for All-Big Eight honors.

I think he's that talented," Jones said. There has never been a doubt about Williams' physical ability. He says he can throw the ball 70-75 yards, and his powerful right arm has left receivers shaking their hands after catching 20-yard bullet passes. At 6-feet-4 and 215 pounds, 281 182 SUGG RETAIL' 'limited mir- only "Thurman in my opinion is a legitimate contender for the Heisman Trophy," Jones said Tuesday as the Big Eight Skywriters tour visited Stillwater: "He thinks he's ready to go full speed right now. He does wear a brace on it (his injured knee), but I think he's healthy and ready to go." Williams, however, is the key.

"Ronnie Williams is obviously a very; very talented person," Jones said. "I've told Ronnie that if we're 1 pressing Neil right now, so I've just got to go wiin a younger guy or someone who is going to." In addition to Brunner, 29, the team released lOth-year linebacker Thomas Howurd, eighth-year wide receiver Earnest Gray and sixth-year defensive back Jeff Griffin. The skills of Howard and Griffin were diminished by injuries. Stallings said Gray, 29, a former favorite target of Brunner's when both were with the New York Giants, was not going to be one of the team's top three receivers and that rookie Scott Holman is receiving a long look. St.

Louis also waived offensive tackle Sid Abramowitz, nose tackle Steve O'Malley, punter Bryan Wagner, linebacker Cam Jacobs and guard Eric Dreiband all free agents and in another move removed former USFL quarterback from the league's exemption list and released him. The Cards' other move was placing second-year defensive end Scott Bergold on injured reserve. Latec on Tuesday, it was announced that defensive end Al "Bubba" Baker had ended his contract holdout and had signed a one-year contract. Baker, a former Pro Bowl performer, is needed on a defensive line that will be minus Curtis Greer for the season's first few weeks. He met with Stallings in Stallings' office and said later that "some of the things (the coach) told me weren't the most pleasing." St.

Louis is expected to ask for a two-game roster exemption for the 270-pound Baker, who was to begin practicing today. Williams possesses a major-league body and good speed. And now, he says, he's got more confidence than ever. I "Last year, all I did was call the plays and do what I had to do," he said. "This year, if I see something that's done wrong, I'm going to tell the guy.

"I'm the type person, if I know what's going on, I have a lot of confidence in my abilities," he said. Playtex By The Associated Press "It's always difficult," says Ohio State Coach Earle Bruce, "to bring young people back early for football in the month of August and prepare them." The preparation is even harder for peerless and fearless pigskin prognosticators who have to plow through all those college football annuals and media guides to familiarize themselves with who's who. But if the Cowboys are to be successful in 1986, says Coach Pat Jones, then quarterback Ronnie Williams not just Thomas must be successful as well.
