This building was constructed in 1868 and was located on the site of the present Lumbertcn power plant, on Water street. The building: was torn down about 1895. In its last years it was used by the youngsters of Lumberton as a part of their playground.

In those days a large hclc in the rear walls traditionally was known as the avenue of escape for several county prisoners. James Hendrix Awarded Medal 4-H Member Wins County Rural Electrification Award. James Hendrix of Lumberton has been awarded a gold medal of honor for making the best report of any 4-H club memuer in Robeson county in a National 4-H rural electrification contest conducted by extension agents. The medal is 7-8 inches high with a clover leaf and high, line towers embossed on the rectangular face and is litted with a clasp lock. Records of county winners compete for state honors and a $50 merchandise certificate.

Ten ail- expense educational trips to the 16th national 4-H Club congress in Chicago Nov. 26-Dec4 Will be awarded to that number of highest scoring state champions. The three highest scoring of the ten will be cash college scholarships of $400, $300 and $200 which are provided, with all other- prizes in the contest by Westinghouse Electric Manufacturing company. Contestants submit a diagram showing the location of their farm with relation to the nearest "high and another plan showing how to wire their home and out buildings if not now wired. They are also required to indicate what appliances they could use to advantage, and what they could add where they now have electricity.

LUMBERTON Presbyterian Orphanage Collection Around $200 Approximately $200 in collections for the Barium Springs orphanage were made for Thanksgiving at the First Presbyterian church, which also was reported today to have "within reach" its goal of $5,000 for a ministers' 'annuity fund.

A special service was conducted at the Presbyterian church last Thursday. A collection of arourfd $450 at the First Baptist church the previous Sunday, for of the Baptist orphanage at Thomasville, is expected to be increased by additional contributions since. The Presbyterian annuity fund is part of $3,000,000 being raised by the Southern Presbyterian church for aged and disabled ministers. The local canvass will continue through this week.
