A3cfST. Wagner's Ring Is Fine Start At Met Opera By ANTON WALKER. Warning the foregathered Republicans at the last Lincoln Day Dinner that abandonment of the gold standard would result in "a series of vi cious cycles of cause and ef fect," Herbert Hoover added that "a mass of gold dashing hither and yon from one nation to another has acted like a cannon loose Gertrude Kappel the deck of the world in a storm." Which might well have been the inspiration for Richard Wagner to write that vicious cycle of greed and hate called the Ring, had he not beat Herbert to it by some sixty years (and fancy this turning out to be a music review!) Anyway, the cannon Were loose on the stage of the Metropolitan Opera House yesterday afternoon, where "Das Rheingold," first of the vicious Cycle, broke like a melodic storm on the ears of a huge and enthralled audience. It was a fine start for the current Cycle of the Ring, with a scenic production of extraordinary beauty and a cast which would be a credit to any opera house in the world. Too many singers to list here by name, beyond mentioning" that Jnedrich Schorr was the Wotan and Gertrude Kappel the Fricka the god and goddess around whom revolves the legend of how mythological Germany went on the gold standard.

Also that Rene Maison, first heard Monday in "Die Meister-singer," was the Loge, a trifle large for the mercurial spirit of fire, but singing with far more freedom and acting with greater ease than at his debut. The real heroes of the performance, however, were Artur Bodan-zky and his orchestra. The work being given as a one-act opera, they played exactly two hours and a quarter without a single let-up! 'Eternal Road' Gets Money To Continue Meyer W. Weisgal, producer of the financially ejnbarrassed "The Eternal Road," yesterday declared that most of the needed $200,000 has been obtained and that the Biblical spectacle will definitely be presented. Whether it will be done this Snrinsr or next September has not been decided. It depends upon the time it will require to finish rebuilding the Manhattan Opera House, and npon Director Max Reinhardt's Hollywood engagements. The present production has been technically abandoned so far as the cast is concerned.

Equity is paying the cast for rehearsals out of a 12, 000 bond, and new contracts will have to be signed with the players when activities resume.
