McFALL PHILADELPHIA (UPI -Dick Sikcs, a tall lean sophomore on the pro golf tour, blistered the Whilemarsh -Valley Country Club's par 72 layout Thursday with an under par 64 to take a four-stroke first round lead in the Philadelphia Golf Classic. Sikes by-passed early finishers Bob Charles of Neiv Zealand, Bruce Devlin and Kel Nagle of Australia, and PGA champion Bob Nichols, who posted four under 68's. Arnold Palmer, fighting to como out of a slump, led a pack of eight at 69. The others were Dave Marr, Dean Refrain, Tom Shaw, Jack McGowan and Sam Carmichael, Lionel Hcbert and HomerO Blancas. The 25-year-old Sikes, who made an auspicious debut during his freshman year by winning the 19G4 Sahara Invitational in his 17th pro slart, conquered the course with a 32-32 in round that featured eight birdies.

The former caddy from Springdale, who joined the pro tour last year from college, said he "prefers playing from behind but with a big lead like this I don't mind." Attorneys Plan To Appeal Libel Judgment SEATTLE, Wash. (AP) Curtis Publishing Co. attorneys said Thursday they will move for a new trial and dismissal of a 5300,000 libel suit, and if that fails will appeal a $175,000 judgment awarded former University of Washington basketball Coach John Grayson. The jury of six men and six women deliberated nine hours before returning a verdict for Grayson, 10-2, in Kings County Superior Court Wednesday night. W.

R. McKelvy, a defense attorney, announced the intention of seeking a new trial or filing an'appeal if necessary. Grayson sued the publishing company, contending a Saturday Evening Post article Jan. 5, 1963, entitled "Basketball Bullies" libeled him and destroyed his coaching career. He was released as Washington coach three months after the article appeared.

The article carried the byline of former referee Al Lightner of Salem, and described what Lightner said were Grayson's actions during a Washington-UCLA game here in March, 1962. Lighlner accused Grayson o( inciting the crowd and causing him to be roughed up as he was leaving the floor at the end of the game. Grayson denied the allegations. -Four Stroke Bulge The six-foot-one inch pro used a unique crouching putting stance lo good advantage in jumping into the lead in the 72-hole tournament. He was on 13 greens in regulation and got home with 24 putts in the 18 holes.

His best birdie putts were a 15-footer on his seventh hole and a tension- packed 12-footcr on the 18th. He played the hack nine first because of the crowded field of 142 pros and one amateur. Sikes, who was chosen "pro rookie of the year" by a golfing magazine last year, said he originally intended to be a school teacher but changed his mind when he won some $20,000 on the pro tour in 1964. His four-stroke edge marked the largest first round lead since Sikes himself slartecf with a 62 at Sahara last October and a three-stroke lead as he led wire to wire. Those six strokes off the pace at 70 included Jay Hebert, Bob Goalby, Bill Garrett, Jack Burke Bob Rosburg, Tommy Aaron, Lou Graham, Phil Rodgers arid George Knudson.

Tony Lema, Bill Casper, Jack Nicfclaus, Mike Souchak, Johnny Pott, local pro Bob Shave, Jerry Barber, Ray Floyd, Charlie Sifford, Babe I and golfing great Ben Hogan were grouped at 71. Gary Player had a 72, and Hogan's long-time rival, Sam Snead, had a 75. Devlin; fifth in the PGA money winning list this year, was troubled by bursitis during his round and after finishing went immediately to a doctor for treatment. Charles, who said he had "been playing so bad the only thing I can do is get better," had an erratic round that included an eagle, four birdies and a double bogie. The eagle came on the par four sixth hole when his second shot with an eight iron went into the cup on the fly from 145 yards out.

Nichols, who will defend his PGA title at Laurel Valley Country Club at Ligon- ler, next week distributed four birdies over the back and front nines. Year-End Cleanup!
