The Mart also links itself to charities by asking some executives to help out wherever their interests lie. One of mine is the Greater Chicago Food Depository, that distributes 100 million pounds of food a year to the needy and provides a soup kitchen for the homeless. My family comes through Chicago a lot, and each person has a favorite haunt. I usually take my mother to Bistro 110, Ciel Bleu or Rosebud on Taylor Street.

Max and my sister Rory, the youngest of us, prefer Ed Debevic's. Everyone likes P.J. Clarke's. It reminds them of the one in New York. One of the best times with my mother was a guided tour she gave me, Max and Dougie, the next to youngest, to the places her family, the Skakels, once rented on the South Side.

This tour included 57th Street and Woodlawn, where she lived for the first five years of her life. Being a Kennedy is terrific in Chicago. I'm more anonymous here than in Massachusetts and not looked at as somebody's little brother. At the same time, it gives me all kinds of exciting access. But Fd give all that back to have my father and my brother David back.

I transferred from day to evening classes shortly before Kate, our 3-year-old daughter, was born. Right now, I'm five courses shy of graduation and also the dad of year-old Christopher Jr.

For me, there's no better place to be than the Mart. It's so involved with the City of Chicago. Every year it draws more than 3 million buying visits to more than 1,000 businesses, some Fortune 500 firms and many small manufacturers, dealers and local representatives. Roughly 10 percent of the buying visits are from convention and trade-show attendee who bring close to $120 million a year of business to Chicago. Our efforts to promote trade shows, markets, conventions and special events are important to many of our tenants.

Our ability to bring people to the Mart can mean the difference between their success or failure in the coming season. The Mart's link to Chicago's convention and visitor industry gives us a part in creating entry-level jobs. These openings acquaint unskilled labor with the process of getting up and going to work, getting around downtown and joining a union.
