Select schools pace college grid awards Bread ley and Quinn by his Nebraska Coach Tom Osborne. "If I'm going to begin with one player, I'm going to begin with my own Crutchfield," said Duncan of the back who leads the Big Eight in rushing with 1,234 yards. "I'd take Jeff Quinn," said Tom Osborne of the Big Eight's leading passer. "He knows our offense.

He's a good runner. It takes four or five years to put our system in a guy's head. I'd take him because of the system here." Colorado Coach Chuck Fairbanks chose not to answer the question "I haven't thought about It" and Kansas State Coach Jim Dickey was offended that the media would only give him one choice. "I think you ought to give us two picks," kidded Dickey, whose Wildcats have lost seven games in a row to fall to 2-6. "But Wilder's a big strong back.

And Buster Rhymes is a pretty good newcomer." Wilder has rushed for 763 yards and Rhymes 469. Bell has rushed for 1,089 yards to rank 10th nationally and second among the country's freshmen behind Georgia's Herschel Walker (1,411 yards). May and Van Home were among seven interior linemen eligible to win the Outland Award, which goes to the center, guard or tackle judged by the football writers to be the outstanding interior lineman in the nation. Other members of the writers' team jn the running for the Outland were Notre Dame center John Scully, offensive linemen Mick Zyre of Brigham Young and Louis Oubre of Oklahoma, and defensive rinemen Kenneth Sims of Texas and Jose Taylor of Houston. Others on the 24-man team included Stanford receiver Ken Margerum; South Carolina running back George Rogers; defensive linemen E.J. Junior of Alabama and Derrie Nelson of Nebraska; linebackers David Little of Florida, Mike Singletary of Baylor and Lawrence Taylor of North Carolina; defensive back John Simmons of SMU, and punter Rohn Stark of Florida State. OKLAHOMA CITY (UPI) Five schools, including nationally top-ranked Georgia, placed two players each on the Football Writers Association of America's 37th annual AllAmerica team, announced Wednesday.

Other schools with two players on the writers' squad included Southern Cal, Pittsburgh, UCLA and Purdue. Representing Georgia were kicker Rex Robinson and running back Herschel Walker, the first freshman ever honored by the football writers, who have been picking All-America teams since 1944. USC placed offensive lineman Keith Van Home and defensive back Ronnie Lott on the squad and Pittsburgh's players were defensive end Hugh Green and offensive lineman Mark May. UCLA's choices were defensive back Ken Easley, who made the team for the third time, and running back Freeman McNeil Purdue honorees were the record-setting combination of KANSAS CITY, Mo. (UPI) Maybe Phil Bradley would rather spend the rest of his life playing baseball but coaches around the Big Eight would rather see the Missouri quarterback in a football uniform preferably their own.

In an informal poll taken Monday during the Big Eight's final weekly conference call, of its football coaches, they agreed that if they could build a team around one player in the conference it would be Bradley. The senior quarterback was named by four of the coaches with, Iowa State tailback Dwayne Crutchfield, Nebraska quarterback Jeff Quinn, Missouri fullback James Wilder and freshmen running backs Kerwin Bell of Kansas and Buster Rhymes of Oklahoma also receiving scattered support. "Bradley's got so much talent," said Oklahoma State Coach Jimmy Johnson. "He can dominate a game just by himself. And quarterback is the one position I'd look to fill." "Bradley is probably the best player in the Big said Oklahoma Coach Barry Switzer.

"There's no superstar defensive player in this league and there's not really an offensive one, either. There's no running back in Billy Sims' class. But Kerwin Bell is a good little player; if you're starting a team, you'd like to have a guy like that four years." "If I had a one-year contract, I'd take Phil Bradley," said Kansas Coach Don Fambrough. "But if I had a four-year contract, I'd take Kerwin Bell." Bradley has been the No. 1 quarterback for the Tigers for virtually his entire four-year career, having only to share the starting assignment in his freshman year with the oft-injured Pete Woods.

But Bradley was the All-Big Eight quarterback in each his sophomore and junior seasons. And Bradley is the odds-on favorite to claim the honor again this season after guiding Missouri to a 7-3 record (with one game remaining) and delivering the Tigers their third straight bowl invitation the Liberty Bowl. Bradley ranks third in the conference in passing but has thrown a league-high 221 aerials for another league-high 1,426 yards. He ranks first in total offense but that's no surprise. He has 6,233 yards in career total offense to remove Lynn Dickey's name from the top of that Big Eight category.

And Bradley has one game left against Kansas Saturday to pad that figure. "I'd take a guy like Bradley," said Missouri Coach Warren Powers. "He can handle all the dimensions he can run, throw, he's very smart, is very durable and has good judgement. He can run an option; drop back or rollout. He can do everything you can ask of a quarterback." Bradley's first love as an athlete, however, is baseball a sport at which he also excels for Missouri.

He has started in the outfield for the Tigers the last two springs and was named the most valuable player of the Big Eight postseason tournament last May. The Crutchfield and Quinn picks were both provincial Crutchfield by his Iowa State Coach Donnie Duncan MCTRIC CORP. bill MW8 wasn't a one-man show, it was a team effort. "This is the first time a Pitt player has ever won the Outland Award and it will be an honor for me to accept it. Now future Pitt linemen pan realize it's not an impossible dream." Formal presentation of the award will be made at the Gold Helmet Banquet in Seattle early next year.
