Atlanta sent reliever Mark Wohlers to Triple-A Richmond. The inspired play of Tim Laker has prompted Montreal Expos manager Felipe Alou to change plans for his catching situation for the start of the regular season. Alou had been saying most of the spring that he would go with two catchers, but it now appears Laker, Tim Spehr and Damn Fletcher will start the season. Reliever Alejandro Pena, who is not expected to pitch this season due to injury, took a $500,000 cut in guaranteed pay under his new contract with Pittsburgh. Mike Mussina threw six scoreless innings as the Baltimore Orioles beat the Pirates 6-4 in Baltimore.

Mussina allowed four hits, walked three and struck out three in lowering his ERA to 1.67. From Chicago Tribuw wire Frank Viola and Corey Bailey combined for a no-hitter Friday, leading the Boston Red Sox over the Philadelphia Phillies 10-0 in Clearwater, Fla. Viola struck out six and walked one in seven innings, and allowed a runner to reach on a strikeout-wild pitch. Bailey pitched the final two innings and walked one. "It was important for me to end the spring on a positive note, and I think I did that," Viola said In his last appearance, Viola allowed nine runs and 12 hits in 2Vj innings against Minnesota.

"It got me mentally focused again," he said. Cleveland pitcher Jose Mesa and Cincinnati first baseman Hal Morris were suspended for three games and fined undisclosed amounts for their parts in a fight during an exhibition game this week. It is the first time in eight years that penalties imposed in spring training have carried over into the regular season. Mesa plans to (AREAVWDE appeal, which means the penalty will not take effect until after a hearing. Minnesota right-hander Scott Erickson removed himself from the Twins' 11-5 victory over Triple-A Portland because of discomfort on the left side of his abdomen.

Erickson, who pitched 2' hitless innings, said he did not believe the injury was related to a one-car auto accident Monday in which he incurred minor facial cuts and a swollen lip. The Red Sox traded pitcher Daryl Irvine to the Pittsburgh Pirates for infielder Jeff Richardson. The Red Sox have been looking for an extra infielder since second baseman Tim Naehring underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder last week. Milwaukee obtained right-handed pitcher Jamie McAndrew, son of former Mets welcoming them to a "fun-filled Chicago baseball weekend" and advising that they might spot their favorite Cubs or White Sox player in the lobby. The Cubs flew in late Friday from their spring training home in Mesa, Ariz.

They leave Saturday night for Chicago. The Sox, though, are in Las Vegas all weekend. LaGrange Rd. Countryside 3ES Tuesday night's season opener against the Twins. Like all hotels in Las Vegas, the lobby of Bally's is crowded with slot machines, Keno tables and sports betting boards, but the players generally shy away. Most prefer to hit the golf courses. The trip is a homecoming of sorts of Guillen and Joey Cora, both of whom played for the Las Vegas Stars.

Cora spent all or parts of four seasons with the Stars. He batted .276 in 81 games in 1987, then went on a tear, hitting .296 in 1988, .310 in 1989 and .351 in 1990 before being traded to the White Sox. Guillen spent the entire 1984 season at Las Vegas and batted .296 as the Stars' leadoff hitter. He remembers the place so well that he took over and gave the driver of the team bus directions on how to get to the players' gate. What Guillen doesn't remember, though, is the slot machines.

"Are you kidding?" Guillen said. "When I was here I couldn't afford to play those things. I didn't make enough money." Durham fails minor-league comeback bid By Joey Reaves Chicago Tribune LAS VEGAS The White Sox released former Cubs first baseman Leon Durham from minor-league camp Friday. Durham had been out of baseball since 1989 when the Sox called him in February and offered a minor-league tryout. He reported in mid-March and hit two home runs in minor-league White Sox notes camp, but was unable to perform well enough to beat out any of three top-quality prospects the Sox have at Triple A.

"He just slowed down a little too much, said Larry Monroe, Sox vice president of scouting and minor-league operations. "He still exhibits some power, but when we compared him to Chris Cron, Drew Denson and Scott Cepicky, he just got beat out of a job." Monroe said Buddy Bell, director of minor-league instruction, told Durham the news in Sarasota, where the Sox minor-league players are still working. "He seemed a little surprised and kind of a little down," said Monroe. "I have nothing but respect for him. It was amazing how hard he worked.

He was just out of the game too long." fl The Sox and the Padres played deep into the night Friday in an exhibition in Las Vegas. The Sox won 19-9 in a game that finished after 1 a.m., Chicago time. They had one eight-run inning, a pair of four-run innings and a three-run inning. Robin Ventura, Michael Huff and Frank Thomas homered. Starter Kirk McCaskill got his fourth win of the spring, tying Jack McDowell at 4-1.

McCaskill pitched five innings and gave up seven runs (six earned) on seven hits. His earned-run average jumped from 2.42 to 3.77. Carlton Fisk played in just his fifth game of spring training Friday night. Fisk singled in a run in his first at-bat, giving him five RBIs in the last three games. "Guys could have been coming in at 6 a.m. and I'd have never known." The Cubs and Sox are staying at Bally's, and the hotel marketing people are making the most of it.
