Poge 7 -The DAILY JOURNAL, Flat River. Thursday, July 8, 1976 Lindenwood College becomes the Big Red's fourth training site in the team's 17-year St. Louis stay. For the Cardinals' first 13 years in St. Louis, and the team's last nine as the Chicago Cardinals, the training was conducted at Lake Forest (111.) College.

In 1973-74, the Big Red practiced at Illinois State University, and last year at Eastern Illinois University. The new training home is a school of approximately 150 male and 300 female students, which is in the process of building an active sports program. The Big Red will be housed in the remodeled Cobbs Hall dormitory and will practice on the school's newly-built football and soccer field that when completed will seat 5,000 spectators. Parking for the 1,500 cars also will be provided. The playing surface on the Lindenwood field will be Hy-Play Turf, a natural grass designed to be rugged enough to withstand the continuous use of a football team.

The new turf has a base of sand, sawdust and growing compounds rather than dirt, and has grown six-inch deep roots since being installed four weeks ago. With draining facilities underneath the grass can withstand up to a four-inch rainfall or watering in a one-hour period and still be playable. Coryell has planned double sessions for the first three weeks of camp, which concludes on July 31. The Cardinals then begin their six-week preseason schedule in Busch Memorial Stadium against the New York Jets in the Shrine Hospital Benefit game. tt44i4A terback Jim Hart, running backs Terry Metcalf and Jim Otis, wide receiver Mel Gray, corner Roger Wehrli, kicker Jim Bakken, tackle Dan Dierdorf guard Conrad Dobler and center Tom Banks all were named to the NFC Pro Bowl team.

Metcalf, Gray, Dierdorf, Wehrli and Bakken all received all-NFL and all-NFC honors. Metcalf set an NFL record of 2,462 combined net yards, became the fourth player in the NFL history to score touchdowns five different ways in a season and led the NFC in kickoff returns. Otis led the NFC and broke John David Crow's Cardinal one-season rushing record with 1,076 yards on a team-record 269 carries. Gray topped the NFC with 926 receiving yards and tied for the NFL lead with 11 touchdown catches. Bakken set a team record for field goal accuracy, converting 19 of 24 attempts.

Since the end of last season, the Cardinals have moved to strengthen their defense by both the draft and trades. Six defensive performers have been acquired in trades, including four who were starters last year. They are end Walt Patulski from Buffalo, tackle Marvin Upshaw and safety Mike Sensibaugh from Kansas City and linebacker Al Beauchamp from the Cincinnati Bengals. The others are reserve defensive back Jeff Severson, acquired from Denver, and linebacker Rodrigo Barnes, from Miami Upshaw and Sensibaugh were obtained for rookie defensive back Tim Gray, the other players for draft choices. In addition, the Big Red's No.

1 draft choice was all-America defensive lineman Mike Dawson from the University of Arizona. ST. LOUIS The two-time defending NFC Eastern Division champion St Louis Football Cardinals begin preparations this weekend for their fourth season under head coach Don Coryell at a new training base. Activity starts Saturday at lindenwood College in St. Charles.

On hand to greet Coryell will be 51 veteran, rookies and first-year players, with the remainder of the team's 72-player roster to report on July 17. Under the direction of Coryell, the Cardinals have finished 10-4 and 11-3 the past two seasons for successive division championships. Since the formation of the NFC East in 1970, no team has won three straight division titles. Dallas (in 1970-71) is the only other division entry to win successive championships. As to the Big Red's goal in 1976, Coryell said, "It is to some way make it into the playoffs again." The team lost first-round playoff games to Minnesota in 1974 and Los Angeles last year.

"We have won our division the last two years by being able to win the close games and coming up with maximum effort on every play. We have to continue to do this because our division is strong now and will be even better this year," Coryell said. vThe Cardinals, who earned the nickname "CardiacTards" for their heart-stopping, last-minute heroics, were a record-setting team again last year. The Big Red set team marks in total yards (4,955) and first downs (276) and the team's offensive line tied a National Football League record for fewest quarterback sacks in a season (8). The 11 victories were a St.

Louis era high. Individual honors also poured in. Quar Big Red signs Dawson LEAD BELT TIRE CO. 217 Router St. Flat River Phone 431-4488 July 23, will report to the Cardinal training camp in St.
