Wednesday Evening, November 27, 1957. SEASONAL FLUCTUATIONS Report Jobless Claims Here Claims for unemployment compensation by jobless persons frtm Cass and part of Carroll county last week totaled 277, an increase of 44 over the previous week. Of these, 60 were new claims and the rest were continued, according to George Vaughan, manager of the local office of the Indiana Employment Security Division. Vaughan said the number of unemployed persons in the area has been increasing slowly since the week of Sept. 26. when only 139 persons were receiving compensation. He attributed the increase to seasonal fluctuations, the most significant of which is the slowdown in construction work during the wintor months. Vaughan said the number of claims processed by his office usually increases during the winter months and reaches a peak in February or March. The local office also processes claims from Pulaski, White and Fulton counties. Last week claims from those counties totaled 60, 63, and 62 respectively, Vaughan said. The total number of claims now being processed by the office is 462, compared with 384 a week ago, and 395 last year at this time. Vaughan said the last estimate on the strength of the labor force in Logansport and immediate vicinity indicated there were 10,578 persons employed in jobs outsic'e the agricultural field. Pfe said he believes unemployment for this area is slightly lower than the average for the state.
