DAM: Repairs would be costly FROM PAGE 1 Trout Unlimited would have a vested interest in removting the dam and further restoring the creek as a trout stream. "This is one of the most productive trout streams in the state," Welter said. "There is no doubt that Duncan Creek would attract fishermen from all over the state if it were allowed to reach its potential as a trout stream." According to Welter, Duncan Creek north of Bloomer has a trout population that has grown to approximately 11,000 fish per mile, high water quality and outstanding natural reproduction rates. But the quality of Duncan Creek falls dramatically at Bloomer. A scientist hired by Trout Unlimited studied the creek recently and concluded the water in Lake Como is collecting above the dam and being warmed by sunlight.

before it runs over the dam. "The water going over the dam is so warm that Brook Trout can't survive," Welter said. "They need cold, clear water to survive and that's what we have up above the impoundment." Welter estimates that it would cost the residents of Bloomer more than $3 million to repair the dam and dredge Lake Como. Taxpayers would also have to foot the bill for continued repairs, upkeep and insurance on the dam, he said. But the cost of removing the dam would cost approximately $200,000, he said.

Groups such as Trout Unlimited are standing ready to help offset some of the costs in restoring the creek to its original state, he said. But Welter admits that the Bloomer dam issue isn't a warm water versus cold water issue. "This is a question of what the people of Bloomer are willing to pay to retain the dam and impoundment," Welter said. THE CHIPPEWA HERALD P.O. The fire department brought Kalk a gift that the men surely thought was a simple one a Chippewa Falls Fire Department T- shirt but the gift moved the chief more than other gift could. "Isn't it nice after all those years being out of there that I could have a shirt like that," Kalk said. "I'm going to wear it every time I dress up," And when a family member suggested the chief wear the shirt as pajamas, he quickly ruled out the suggestion. "Oh, no, this is too nice," he said. "But this would be good to bury me in," Kalk said with a smile.

Kalk shared with his young comrades the story of the greatest fire of his regime, the Tschopp-Durch lumberyard fire on High Street where the Romeis Apartments now stand. also told the story of the days he responded to 19 fires in a single shift. "It's funny how the memories come back," he said. Kalk was well known in Chippewa Falls during the 1960s for cruising to fire scenes in a bright red station wagon. He recalled how that car almost cost him his job.

Dre JEFFREY HAGE THE CHIPPEWA HERALD Chippewa Falls Fire and Emergency Services members make their way into the home of Ed Kalk after pulling a fire engine "I told (the city council) I wanted a station wagon or I was done," he said. But the city had other plans. They gave him an old police car. After a year, Kalk demanded a station wagon once again. "I said buy me a station wagon, or I'm done.

They finally gave in," he said. "You had to put pressure on them back then, it's not like it is today," he added. "But I had to get en my hands and knees and beg for a radio to put in it!" Jones clings to life after vehicle crash FRANKLIN, Tenn. (AP) Country singer George Jones was in critical condition Saturday after he smashed his sport-utility vehicle into a bridge near his home while talking on a cell phone to his stepdaughter. Jones, 67, is scheduled to sing at this year's Country Fest in rural Cadott.

He lost control of his Lexus while rounding a curve on Highway 96, a curvy heavily-traveled twolane road, and hit the bridge abutment, state police said. Police said Jones was not wearing a seat belt. It took rescuers about two hours to free him following the 1:30 p.m. accident, and he was taken by helicopter to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in nearby Nashville. Doctors said Jones suffered a collapsed lung, ruptured his liver and had internal bleeding.

Jones unconscious when he was brought in and doctors gave him medication to keep him that a way, Dr. John Morris said. Morris offered no prognosis but said he expects Jones will remain in critical condition for at least one or two days. Jones, famous for hits like "He Stopped Loving Her Today" and "The Race is On," is generally considered one of the finest country singers ever. He was married for six years to the late singer Tammy Wynette.

The pair were known as "The King and Queen of Country Music" in the 1970s. Fire destroys garage CADOTT A fire about 10 a.m. Saturday destroyed a garage and spread to a house owned by Len and Judy Mechelke, 608 W. Stacy Court, Cadott. A spokesman for the Cadott Fire Department said the garage was fully engulfed in flames when CHIPPEWA YOUTH HOCKEY FEB.

But at age 65 the job was getting the best of Kalk and he retired, despite the urging of city officials that he stay on one more year. "I said, 'No! I'm done on April 1. Find someone else'," Kalk said. "You can only take so much it was time to get out." But for just a moment Friday, Ed Kalk didn't mind being back in the circle of the fire fighter's fraternity.

Ac a matter of fact, he genuinely enjoyed i it. "Ed, you made my day," he said to Mishefske. "I'm glad you fellows stopped in," he said to the rest of the CFFD crew. "It was a surprise to me. You couldn't have given me a better present," Kalk told the men.

And as the men left his residence after 'a short afternoon visit, the former chief was still expressing his surprise at the birthday visit. "I just can't get over it. This takes the cake," Kalk said.
