INCLUDE AIRFARE, "'-Jigw Texas Gambling Hall and Hotel northwest of the strip In Las Vegas, New hotel and Vegas version By KATHRYN STRAACH Dallas Morning News LAS VEGAS Big is Texas' image, and Texans are mighty dam proud of it. So why in a town known for "big" home to the worlds largest hotel, the MGM Grand, with 5,500 rooms is thT" hotel themed after the Lone Star State one of its smallest? Don't worry too much.

Size is the only stereotypical ingredient missing from the Texas Gambling Hall Hotel, which opened here last July. That is. if every Texas stereotype you can imagine is of the boot-scooting Fort Worth Stockyards variety. The Wild West image and all it entails can be found here in this 200-room hotel and casino. The Texas twist has been so successful that the casino began a expansion in November, a mere four months after opening: it is scheduled for completion this week.

From the longhom-decorated Cadillac (complete with Holstein-pattern interior) to the 200-pound mirrored armadillo not to men an upscale version of an economy motel but with a good interior decorator and spacious bathrooms. Running the length of one wall in the casino is a Disneyesque Western-city setting, including the likes of a blacksmith shop, boaidinghouse and a post office, with fake facades Here you'll find six restaurants (a seventh, Chinese Express, is across the casino): The Stockyard Steakhouse, which offers juicy mesquite-grilled steaks. The Laredo Can Una Cafe, for Tex-Mex and margaritas. Galveston Bay Seafood Co. San Lorenzo Italian Restaurant.

From the airport, head north on Interstate 15. Exit to the west at Rancho Drive or Lake Mead Boulevard. Even if you don't stay at the hotel, you might consider visiting it if you have a car or a big win in a casino. The facility is about 2 miles north of downtown and about 5 miles north of The Strip.

Sure, Texans perpetuate the stereotypes. In fact, the concept for the new Las Vegas hotel and Oc.asino came from Frank Fertitta originally from Galveston. He sold the operation to Station Casinos.

His native roots and a lot of research have made for a fun and somewhat authentic version of the Lone Star State. The building is made of Texas limestone. More or less. "It's a cast production," says James Muir, president of the hotel and casino until three weeks ago. "I defyanyone to tell me it doesn't look like Texas lime- stone." An oil derrick is at the entrance to the parking lot.

A giant bronze statue of four cowboys riding horses greets folks before they enter. Mesquite trees are carefully worked into the landscape. The slate-floor lobby features cow skulls on the wall and leather seating. The hotel, a six-story structure, is on one end. The Rio Grande Buffet, which serves up brisket, ribs, barbecue chicken and other such cuisine. In fact, barbecue "chef" John Reaves of Smokey John's in Dallas trained folks here to the tricks of deep-pit barbecuing. In addition to the restaurants, the casino offers six bars.

Most notable is the Central Bar, featuring a 1976 Eldorado convertible suspended on a hydraulic lift and sporting 7-foot longhoms across the hood. And then there's the 150-seat Armadillo Honky Tonk lounge with the armadillo, an idea taken from Billy Bob's in Fort Worth. It's made from 3.000 plexiglass pieces. Casino When the expansion is completed later this month, the casino will offer 1 ,950 slot machines (including plenty of nickel slots), 35 gaming tables, a keno lounge, a larger poker room and a 175-seat race and sports book.
