Thompson brings life to Austen's 'Sensibility' By Jack Garner Gannett News Service Movie and TV watchers have been reveling in a wealth of Jane Austen riches of late including "Pride and Prejudice" on AE and "Persuasion" at movie art houses. Just consider them fine lead-ins for the crown jewel of Austen adaptations, the new version of "Sense and Sensibility," with Emma Thompson, Kate Wtaslet and Hugh Grant Based on Austen's first novel, it details the romantic exploits of the impoverished but resourceful Dashwood sisters in rural, 18th century England. Although Taiwanese filmmaker Ang Lee might seem an odd choice for a period British romance, he delivers a beautiful motion picture.

"Sense and Sensibility" overflows with its tide objects: It is erudite and playful, a showcase of intelligence and style. The result is richly romantic and awfully funny. Much credit goes to the prodi- Sense and Sensibility (Excellent) Who directed It: Ang Lee Who's In It Emma Thompson, Kate Winslet, Hugh Grant Rating: PG What It's about: A story about the romantic exploits of the impoverished but resourceful Dashwood -sisters in 18th century England Where it's playing: Waterworks Cinemas Gannett News Service Elmor (Emma Thompson) and Marianne, Dashwood (Kate Winslet) and their mother (Gemma Jones) high collars, like a turtle retreating into his shell; a restrained Rickman in an impressive change of pace from vation, "Sense and Sensibility" sorts out threads an artful portrait of a restrictive society. Although poults certainly are to be made about the injustices of the period for women, screenwriter Thompson lets them flow naturally from Austen's story. In her script, she wisely resisted the temptation to heighten the satire or to create a feminist polemic for modern audiences.

Though Asian, Ang Lee might not have been as strange a choice to direct as it first appears. His earlier films, "The Wedding Banquet" and "Eat, Drink, Man, Woman," also focused on family ties and traditions and the pressures of society. And he brings to the film the more acute sensibility, if you'll excuse the word, of an outsider observer. The performances are all superb: Thompson and Winslet as the two sisters who are as different as day and night; Jones as their concerned, supportive mother, Grant as a man so shy he tries to retrieve behind his composer who puts his dream on hold to teach high school music Othello (R nudity violence) A competent but uninspiring version of Shake speare tragedy Laurence Fishbume stars Waterworks Cinemas: 1,4 7 930pm Sabrina (PG) An uneven remake of the Billy Wilder movie fable about a high society romance between a wealthy industrialist and a chauffeur daughter 930pm Super Sever 130 430 7 2 5 9 4 5 Sense Sensibility (PG adult situations) Emma Thompson retelling of the Jane Austin tale about two sisters England Waterworks Cinema: 1 4 7 945pm Sudden Death (R violence profanity) Not reviewed Jean-Claude Van Damme must protect the Vice President when terrorists take over Pittsburgh's Civic Arena Bellevue Cinemas: 7 915pm Super Sever 115 315 516 715 915pm Toy Story (G) The first full-length computer animated feature is a technical tour-de-force but also a warm-blooded and "unny adventure late for the child all of us Carmlke Cinemas: 115 315 515 7 1 5 9 1 5 pm Showcase North: 1 3 5 7 9 3 5 7 2 0 9 3 0 Two By Sea (Rl Not reviewed Dems Leary and Sandra Bullock co-star in this new romantic comedy Showcase North-115 315 515 7 35 9 40 pm Waterworks Cinemas: 12 45 3 510 735 945pm 12 Monkeys (R violence profanity nudity) A dark tale of a time traveler seeking a cure to a olague begun the present Carmlke Cinemas: 110 410 7 9 35 Showcase North: 1 30 4 30 715 9 50 Waterworks Cinemas: 1 4 7 9 3 5 Waiting to Exhale (R profanity sexual discussions nudity 1 The latest and best o' several films which women fnends discuss and explore their love lives Showcase North: 1 4 3 0 725 955pm Waterworks Cinemas: 1 4 7 930pm gious inorripsonTSshe not onry stars but wrote a clever, witty script that brings Austen's story marvelousty to life. 13. Thompson plays Elinor Dashwood, the eldest and most sensible of the three Dashwood sisters. Kate Winslet is Marianne, the more playful middle sister, a teen-ager with a recklessly romantic soul. Emile Francois plays 11-year-old Margaret, the youngest sister. She spends, most of her time in a tree- house or hiding under a table and isn't much of a factor in the story, except, of course, she's another mouth to feed.

Their mother (Gemma Jones) recently has been widowed, and according to English law at the time, the family estate goes to the deceased's son from an earlier marriage. He arrives with his shrewish wife, Fanny, and the couple throw the Dashwood women out of the home with only a 500-pound annual stipend on which to live. Review The only good thing that comes from the situation is that Elinor Dashwood meets Fanny's timid but kindly brother, Edward (Hugh Grant). Fanny, however, nips the romance in the bud; she hates Elinor and looks down her snobbish nose at the now-poor family. The Dashwoods depend on the kindness of a cousin who lets them live in a small cottage on his property.

They also spend time with relatives in London. Elinor continues to pine in her restrained, quift way for Edward, although she's reluctant to take action. Marianne is not so reticent After injuring her ankle on the foggy heath, she's rescued by the dashing John Willoughby (Greg Wise) and immediately begins angling for his affections. This pains her neighbor, the wealthy, good-hearted but glum Col. Brandon (Alan Rickman).

He's had his eye on Marianne but lacks the confidence to pursue her with vigor. acters; and Wise as a man who is as shallow as he is handsome. kfeewfiid Video BUY, SELLJRADE II PREVIOUSLY OWNED VIDEOTAPES Movta Children's NATIONAL AMUSEMENTS UMUM M0MB MOT All MOWS NO tUHt CONTMVOUS SHOW DMT, Area theaters Bellevue 609 Lincoln Ave 766-7744 Also It Takes Two (PG) Carmlke Cinemas, Cranberry: Cranberry Mall Route 19 772-3111 Showcase Cmetnai North: 9700 McKnight Road McCandless 931-1870 935-5770 Super Saver Northway Mall 8000 McKnight Road 367-1593 Mostly second-run films call theater for times All shows all seats $3 In addition to the above ist Casino (R) Copycat (R) Get Shorty (R) It Takes Two (PG) Seven (R) Waterworks Cinemas: Waterworks Mall FreeportRoad Fox Chapel 784-1402 How to reach the LJfettyle department Is your cat a hero?
