The "traitors" executed in this man's presence all refused bandages for their eyes and faced the I squad, one ot" them with the cry i of "Hcil Hitler, Heil President Praises Hitler President Von i-linden burg's strong protective hand was thrown around Yon Papon after Ihe 86-year old executive had congratulated Hitler and Gocring on their "liquidation" with bullets of conservatives and radical rebels against Hitlerism. Only iy executives have been accounted for in official statements, despite reports that literally hundreds were executed and many "took the consequences" (committeed suicide) or were "killed resisting arrest." Many persons were unaccounted for, and most of these were 1 tentatively recorded as under arrest. To the man in the street this was the bluest blue Monday in Berlin in many a day.

As people went about their normal duties, they glanced this way and that and talked about nothing more important than' the weather. The fear of secret police was universaj-, and in cafes there was a dead silence except for the rattling of dishes when the orchestras paused between selections. Crowds moved back and forth in Wilhelmstrasse, staring at the building where Hitler and his collegues were in conference, as if they hoped to learn something magically through the walls. Police marched by twos, with rifles slung on their shoulders. They were ready for emergency duty, but meanwhile they kept the people moving--always moving.
