Smocking is a decorative embroidery done on pleated fabric. The bonnets are distributed to parents for their keeping.

"The babies don't leave clothes or toys behind, so the bonnets are something that the parents can keep and remember their baby by." said Rippin. The guild has 52 members from Beaver, Butler and Westmoreland counties, and approximately 10 are from the North Hills. The Pittsburgh Smocking Guild was started six years ago by two national members who realized that they both were from Pittsburgh and decided to create a guild closer to home.
