By GEORGE SHAFFER. Hollywood, Dec. 7. Gladys Hasty Carroll, authoress of "As the Earth Turns," was visiting Warner Studio, where her novel is being picturized, and expressed pleasure with some of the sets and situations. Then she came to Director Al Green, who at first had been reluctant to take the assignment, and asked: "You didn't want to diret this picture, did you?" "No," Green confessed, "they tried to get some of our fine directors to do it.

They had hopes of petting Frank Borzage or E. H. Griffith, and Archie Mayo finally decided he didn't want, to make it either. Then, as usual, I got it." Mrs. Carroll's face fell.

"But," Green continued, "I seem to have had fair success with pictures other directors didn't want to make. For instance, 1 did 'Disraeli' with George Arliss, and after that I did one called 'Old English with Arliss. Both made the studio a lot of money." And Mrs. Carroll beamed. Jean Muir, recently from the New York stage, has played three successful leads in her first six months as a movie actress, and now has the tentative promise to be starred after finishing "As the Earth Turns" and one other film, as Dick Barthelmess' lead.

Miss Muir's confidence in her own film phonograph records, singing the tenor, second tenor, baritone and second baritone records for as many phonograph records, and then running them all together for the quartet. Eddy has been working in "Hollywood Party" for Rosemary Ames, the Chicago girl who is making her film debut in a featured spot in "Disillusion" at Fox's, has one bit of luck; the director of her film, Irving Cum-mings, has a Hollywood record of starting movie newcomers off successfully. Cummings directed Janet Gaynor in her first film, "Johnstown Flood," and directed John Boles in his first, "Romance of The Underworld." Bartiielmess and his director, G. W. Pabst, of "A Modern Hero," don't get along any too chummily, for Pabst, who was one of the best known directors in Germany, likes to make a movie with all long shots no close-ups except where he is forced to include them.
